Does anyone know what shows Tisch will be doing next year? What about New Studio?

ooops…I tried to go back and edit the subject line but it won’t let me…I meant 2012-2013

Does anyone know what shows Tisch will be doing next year? What about New Studio?

ooops…I tried to go back and edit the subject line but it won’t let me…I meant 2012-2013

For Tisch Stageworks (the mainstage shows), they’re doing Measure for Measure (which has already been cast), Spring Awakening, Milk Like Sugar, and a couple other shows that no one I’ve asked knows the names of…

I’m a New Studio Junior, and we haven’t been told yet what next year’s projects are, either for Juniors or Sophomores.

OperationGold, Did you see the original Broadway production? (Don’t know if you are NYC local.) Just curious as to what you think Tisch might come up with to make their production “unique” in the same town where basically SA was created/incubated. Yikes, so many productions going up across the country now that the license has been released. How will NYU make it special, one wonders …

Circumstantially, I saw the Broadway show about a half dozen times due to my 2 teen sons and their assorted friends. I enjoyed it more each time I saw it. Loved the music. Felt the story. Adored the youth on stage. Got the angst and, more importantly, understood it. I would be absolutely thrilled to see a Main Stage production of this show blow it out of the water at NYU!

I’m certainly up for it. Fingers crossed …

I saw it when it toured to Los Angeles. Not one of my favorites, but I’m very excited to see NYU’s production of it!

I’m pretty sure that Kenneth Mitchell (one of the core acting teachers in NSB) is directing it. He directed NSB’s production of Secret Garden last semester. I’ve yet to have him as a teacher, but I’ve heard that he’s brilliant and amazing and I’m certain that it will be a really cool and interesting production.

Well I may have been swept away by the fierce enthusiasm of all the youthful followers, lol! But no, I genuinely liked Duncan Sheik’s music and Steven Sater’s peculiar lyrics. The set was great fun and I even got to see my kid up there in the cheap seats on stage when he was just 16. Happy memories. I’ve heard Kenneth Mitchell is pretty amazing too, directly from my own son who has studied with him at NSB. Still, the original production is a tough act to follow in NYC. We shall see what Mr. Mitchell has up his sleeve. Hope to see some NSB talent on the main stage for this one!

Hope you are enjoying your summer. Will you be back to NSB for advance studio?

do either of you know what semester SA is being performed? Where did you see the list? I checked the Tisch drama website but they’ve still got last year’s productions listed.

There isn’t a list online to my knowledge. Another CC member mentioned to me that the students saw a list. Maybe it was an email or mailing?

I guess I could mention here that a musical my daughter wrote is one of the fall mainstage musicals (Stageworks). Obviously I know this to be fact through my daughter. However, another CC parent told me she saw my D’s musical on a list that her student saw and so there is some sort of list.

I don’t believe the schedule for next fall has been officially announced, other than MEASURE FOR MEASURE which was cast at the end of the school year and will be directed out of the Classical Studio. (They go into rehearsal in August.) The Main Stage productions usually get plenty of high profile attention among all the studios when audition calls go up. So not to worry about missing the opportunity – though I have no idea if it will be fall, winter or spring for SA. And do keep an eye out for a certain musical mentioned by SoozieVT. Very exciting to have an alumna’s musical be produced at Tisch! Yikes, so much to look forward to at Tisch this upcoming year!

So how does casting a main stage work exactly? Every kid from every studio can audition? Can someone who knows explain the process a little? Thanks!

When my D attended Tisch, students from any studio could audition for the mainstage shows (which are now referred to as Stageworks). In fact, students in acting studios were regularly cast in musicals and vice versa.

Many studios also have their own productions just open to their own students.

To answer the question as to which semester Spring Awakening will be…it is the mainstage (Stageworks) show for spring semester and my daughter’s musical is the fall mainstage musical (mid November). A birdie told me. Likely not “officially” announced… though people here already seem to know they are doing Spring Awakening, but just not when.

Thanks for the inside scope. Fall was looking like bad timing for my kid. Too much going on. Hopefully he will find time to audition for SPRING AWAKENING for the spring production – as will many talented and trained Tisch actors across studios. (Hey, I think even talent outside of Tisch is welcome to audition for Mainstage productions. Come one, come all!) He’ll be in MEASURE FOR MEASURE (very minor role) but will have to pass on your daughter’s show for content reasons, lol! Not to sound cryptic to other posters. Just that some shows are more suited to certain actors than others. SoozieVT’s daughter already has a hit with this show. Lucky the actress who get’s to be a part of this upcoming production! Stay tuned …

My D is in NSB and she said all of the shows were announced before the kids left and that they were told when they would be.

Tutu, I’m sure you are correct. My son came home from school telling me the upcoming shows – though he was not specific about dates/timing. He only seemed focused on his own show he had been cast in (minor role) at the top of the season. He’d love to do SPRING AWAKENING. I expect some great competition across the studios for this show, which is why I brought it up. A very talented director is attached, as was previously mentioned. I’ve got my kid home for a couple of days around the holiday. Perhaps I can pin him down to dates? But somehow I doubt it. He is just not that forthcoming. Is this a guy thing? Do guy actors just not get into the details? It’s something I’ve wondered over recent years. My DS is laid back and ambitious at the same time. Go figure.

Anyway, Happy 4th to All!

Bville I don’t think they were given any specifics yet. Yes, this will be tough especially since there are something like 7 parts??? I think??? I have two daughters and a son and it is my son that NEVER knows details so it must be a guy thing-lol…
Anyway, this will be an exciting show as will the fall show that was written by soozievt’s daughter! My D can’t wait to get back to school! What studio is your S in?

Tutu, DS is in NSB MT - so naturally he’d love to be in a Stageworks musical! He too is looking forward to the start of the school year. He is moving up with NSB for advanced studio, which (again!) is all new and exciting. The NSB kids are especially curious to learn what shows will be performed within their own studio.

Lots of good stuff coming up for we-the-parents to enjoy, no doubt.

It seems like the Stageworks (mainstage) production season is now posted on Tisch’s site (even though this doesn’t nearly represent all plays and musicals at Tisch overall).

By the way, I know that the auditions for the fall mainstage musical will be held the first week of September. :D

Thanks soozievt- I always say you are so knowledgeable and helpful! I will tell my D today if she doesn’t already know!!! Have a great weekend!

that’s a really interesting mix of performance opportunities.

I see that Tisch has done some work on their website over the summer, but I hope they still do more. It is so hard to get information about the school. There are still a lot of blank “under construction” pages and it is difficult to get information about performance opportunities apart from Stageworks.

They are really doing themselves a disservice in enabling prospective students to get a good feel for the school!

I think the Stageworks lineup does reflect the ethos of the school in combining the classical with the topical and thought provoking as well as creativity on the part of the students themselves in helping to devise some of the work. Interesting that they are doing a Word counterpart to the Displacement Project. I attended the panel discussion that went along with that last year and it was a fascinating insight into the students and faculty.
