MTgirlsmom, my D is doing the Tisch program. She has NOT received anything like a daily schedule or which shows she is seeing, in spite of the fact that I left a voice mail asking about it two weeks ago. She has joined the facebook group but none of them seem to have this info either. This is the first I have even heard of the fact that she will be doing her classes at Tisch, also that she should have a song prepared. I can only hope they are more organized once she gets there, but your info has been invaluable. Thanks again!

HSN - my S received his daily schedule yesterday for this summer’s program. Mind you, he’s in the Strasberg track, not CAP 21 or ETW; however, it looks like all three programs are on the same calendar. Not only was the daily schedule outlined, the list of performances to be seen and Strasberg specific requirements were sent. Looks like there’s still more to come (“We are still finalizing the arrangement of roommates and once we have that information we will pass it on to you”).

HI everyone—Just wanted to say I am back after a week and a half trip back east (from L.A.) and I moved my D into Weinstein Hall for her month long CAP 21 program and she sounds from texts deliriously happy and busy. I will say that some of the information came out later than it should, telling kids to have monologues and songs prepared less than two weeks before the start of the program, etc. but I can’t worry about it now. (Fortunately she had some stuff ready but it still would have been helpful…) I would really have liked to have gotten a list of things to bring much earlier than we did (we bought dance clothes and learned two weeks before the program started that they have a pretty strict dress code (no slogans etc.) which threw out several things we had purchased. But anyway…! Drop off day was great, the orientation was wonderful, I enjoyed seeing and hearing Patricia Decker who is head of recruitment for Tisch after meeting her here in LA last fall at a performance arts college fair…Dorms are fabulously air conditioned and all seems good. Anybody else have a son or daughter in this program and if so are they hearing good things?

“Anybody else have a son or daughter in this program and if so are they hearing good things?”

Yes – my S is keeping a blog, so all his friends and family can share in his experience. After their first night and dinner together @ TSOA last Sunday night, he wrote that the program assistant … “pretty much just said that we should take advantage of this because it was hard to get into and that it can mean a lot if you want it to, or you can just wait for it to be over. I plan to work hard.” Also, regarding his first Method Acting class (he’s in Strasberg) on Tuesday … “It’s like when you smell something and it instantly reminds you of something or someone years ago, but in reverse, and its hard. but really powerful when you feel it working which we, or at least I, did a little bit. Our professor is old and crazy and I love it. He is the old guy at the end of Big Daddy (anyone?) and his ex-wife is Mayella … in the To Kill a Mockingbird movie.”

Only two days into this, and I’m convinced it’s money well spent.

My D is in the Cap 21 program through Tisch and she is LOVING it. She was happy about levels for dancing and is very happy with the quality of the dance professors–she feels challenged and is learning a lot. She adores Bill Daugherty for vocal performance. The jury is still out on the vocal technique class–her vocal teacher here in CA is very strong and particular, D not sure she is ‘buying’ the technique yet. But she feels very comfortable and supported in her acting class (she was a little worried about that one.) They met Kent Gash–the new head of the New Studio (for MT and Acting) and she was really impressed. NYU is now definately “on the list” were her words. They are keeping very busy but sounds like it is going to be an amazing summer. I also wish the organizational issues were a little stronger. It is difficult being so far away and getting information in a less than timely manner. But overall, so far, all is well:)

My D also took classes with Bill Daugherty at CAP21 (regular college, not pre-college) and learned a lot and really loved working with him. I don’t know who your D’s vocal tech teacher is. One of the beauties of Tisch, however, is that the program is big enough that you don’t have the same few teachers all four years and you can experience different approaches and teaching styles.

I believe that yesterday the kids had an info session on Tisch admissions. My D said that she was told they don’t superscore the ACT and she pretty much got the impression that if you don’t have at least a 26 on the ACT composite not to bother. And yet I remember hearing about kids who had scores lower than that (or commensurate SAT scores) who did get into Tisch. My D is struggling to bring up her standardized test scores but she has a 4.0 GPA and otherwise great recs, ECs, etc. Any thoughts?

HSN…Have you read the new requirements for 2010? There is an amazing assortment of variable options in what standardized test scores you can use.

[NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Freshman Applicants > Standardized Tests](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

Does she have maybe three good A/P scores?

Unfortunately, no. Her school doesn’t offer APs, and she didn’t do well on subject tests either. She has a learning disability, she has learned coping strategies that have allowed her to do well and take a rigorous curriculum in her strengths (all honors in non science and math classes) but she doesn’t do well in ANY standardized tests. even with NYU’s variable options. She still does best on the ACT and in practice tests is in fact within their range, she just seems to go down a few points during the real thing. But maybe the third time will be the charm…

Don’t worry my daughter had learning disabilities and took the ACT twice. She got extra time because of her learning disabilities and she got into NYU. Her scores were just borderline. She only had one AP. Her grade average was 3.65 out of a 4 point.

HSN - My D also had only one AP class, only a handful of honors classes and her grade point was just bit above actressmom’s D, but was admitted as well. She was also just below their mid-point range for ACT. If you are that close, may as well go for it as you just never know. I will also add that after the kids had their admissions rep talk to them last summer at CAP21, they were all pretty much terrified that none would get in (but as it turns out, quite a few did!) And Bill Daugherty is a gem!!

I talked to my Cap 21 D last night and she was flying high (no pun intended) because they had just come back from seeing Hair. All the kids went up on stage and danced during the curtain call and then they had a talk back with the cast which she loved. Sounds like a great time was had by all!

Talked with mine last night as well…she reported the same “high” and said that all the kids were saying that if they died and went to heaven (quite an assumption already) that they would be ok with it because they have danced on a Broadway stage…gee no drama there! LOL It sounds like they are having an amazing experience and growing so much in this process. “I couldn’t be happier” …no, really.

I know we are a relatively small group, but just wanted to know if other parents who were there for the parent day were impressed as I was. On the down side, the kids were exhausted (the night before they lifted the curfew and many kids had gotten very little sleep) and many, many kids were obviously sick. On the plus side, it was such a treat to get a taste of each one of their classes, and to see you kid work with their teachers. I feel it was kind of luck that I decided to come, the program doesn’t really push it much, but it was so worth it for many reasons, not the least being the opportunity to get a peek at what your child would be doing in an intense BFA program. What a great bunch of teachers and talented and inspiring and HARD WORKING kids. Kudos to all!

My D was one of the ones who got sick at the very end of the program…so she couldn’t sing for the parents day and she was really bummed–she did get to do her scene which was good…

But I agree the day was very informative and impressive to see the impact of the feedback given to individual students (even if they weren’t your own) I really like that it wasn’t a performance but more of a works in progress showing…it was much more of a window into the training and they didn’t have to spend a great deal of classtime preparing for a “performance” which was good.
I think the kids all learned a tremendous amount and forged great friendships with their peers. I am only bummed that if they go to NYU they will not be working with the wonderful teachers of Cap 21, I know they will have other wonderful teachers but…
It sure was a highlight for the kids to sing with Sutton Foster that last week…she was so encouraging and humble.

I seem to have a very hard time navigating the NYU website. I was looking for the website that had the Tisch Musical Theatre Summer Program information. Im looking to apply for summer 2010. I know the page is more than likely not upadated quite yet but i would love to have it saved. Thank you so much for your help!

[Summer High School: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs)

Thank you for posting the website. I am excited to apply and hope i get in. I am just very nervous since its based only on application and no audition, making my essay and academics the focal point.

Hey! I knw its been a YEAR since this thread started, and as a sophomore this year, I will be applying to the Tisch Summer High School Film Narrative. I was just wondering if any of you sophomores got into the '09 program. Thanks!

Does anybody know if a Rec Letter is required for the program?

The site says one has to be from a ‘HS representative’
does that mean I can just get 2 teacher recs?
