To (Explain The) B or Not to B

I've been reviewing my record and sophomore year was toughest. 3.93uw frosh, 3.66uw soph 4.0uw junior. Weighted my junior year was 4.71 owing to five APs. I even took an extra AP test via self study (I know doesn't really count toward admission - but the 5 on comp sci may obviate the need for a basic class in college). The reason for the B's in the sophomore year is I took AP biology and I found that single class to be more work than the five APs I took junior year combined including AP physics and Calc AB. I was determined to get an A in AP Bio and I accomplished that. But it caused me to take my eye off the ball in some other classes and so that put some B's on the record. So my question is - should I try and address this in the college application or just let it go? Would it be seen as silly or desperate or would it just be an acceptable part of explaining that year's results? My other results are strong - nearly 2300 SAT, 790s and 800s on SAT II, 4 5's and 3 4's on the AP tests. Freshman year was a cake walk. I wish so many schools didn't throw that out!

Let it go; there is no way an explanation will come across as anything other than whiny. Your stats are great. Devote a lot of time to writing some stellar essays. Good luck!!

I don’t think you should explain it. If you’re majoring in anything Bio related you may want to talk about (organically, in one of the supplements or additional questions) how you much you loved AP Bio and how you vowed to yourself that you could dominate the class. Anything else will sound like you’re begging for a “free pass” that isn’t even necessary in the first place. You’re fine.
