<p>I emailed a college the other day (not Yale, but an Ivy) asking if they viewed applications based on region, and I got a big fat "no." He said that they DO divide the officers by region, but there are no quotas of any kind, and that the number of applicants in a region does not matter but the applicant him/herself. So take that ask you may..</p>
<p>At the back of my head there has always been the sneaking suspicion that they're just being politically-correct by saying so. Because it seriously doesn't justify the fact that the international applicant pool is so much stronger* but only forms 9% of the enrolled cohort.</p>
<p>*Speculation.. based on the logic that the top 1-5% of each country is probably good enough to want to aim for highly selective US schools.</p>

<p>I don't think you guys who are applying again RD should worry TOO much about regional quotas. Yes, I am pretty sure there is some regional bias (kid from north dakota not judged the same way as kid from new york city), but what can you do about it? this info is basically to satisfy many curious and bored deferees (or just people who happen to stop by) :)</p>

but as to "# applicants from region doesn't matter" -- well, i do honestly think they balance things out a bit by being more lenient to someone from a farm who had little opportunity to compete in an Olympiad or win Siemens or whatever, because he will bring "diversity" to Yale just as a URM will bring diversity, and is thus judged on a different scale. More is expected of some than others. and yale DOES need those guys from the middle of nowhere and the guys from inner cities, etc. if yale were filled with students from the most competitive neighborhoods (which is probably what would happen if applications were looked at without concern to student background), it would be a boring place.</p>

<p>Probably in most cases absolutely nothing was wrong - and that's why they were deferred and not rejected. There simply just aren't enough spots, especially early. Good luck.</p>
