Today is the last day to decide for Class of 22: Rotman Commerce or McGill Desautels for BCom?

Today is the last day, and I know it is so last moment. Any tips, insights, or input on: UofT Rotman Commerce or McGill Desautels for BCom?

I just wanted to let you know that you actually have until 11:59 pm tomorrow night 5/1. I can’t help with the schools, sorry.

@DadTwoGirls, Do you have any advice about McGill or Rotman?

Apparently, both programs are excellent. McGill’s Desautels Management program (Undergraduate) probably has better global recognition (including with US companies) simply because of the global recognition of the McGill brand. From what you see across forums, more top consultants and IBs (Investment Banks) go to the McGill campus, compared to Rotman Commerce. The Rotman Commerce (as the undergrad program is known) does get a lot of positive rub off from the Rotman MBA reputation.

Again, forums say that the Rotman program is very difficult – due to grade deflation, and just in general. What’s surprising is that Rotman’s recruitment reputation isn’t that good – considering that it sits bang in the middle of where all the financial action is, in Canada’s top business environment – Bay Street. There is no data available on where the students go (at least not by identified business brand name) other than which sectors they end up working in.

And, the Rotman faculty list is not available on the website, whereas, the McGill website has detailed info on who teaches at Desautels undergrad. Both have exchange programs. McGill is slighly more expensive – if you add in costs of housing and meal plans.

Both are great schools so it comes down to what type of environment your student is looking for. My son is an alum of Desautels so I am a bit biased. Toronto is the corporate capital of Canada so internships would be readily available there. Montreal is a unique city and if your student is not bilingual it would be his only opportunity to live there. Desautels is also very internationally focused.

Thanks for this. Did your son have difficulties in getting internships? My son is not bilingual, and I am assuming his internships would have to be in Toronto (or elsewhere, like in the US). My son is gravitating towards McGill Desautels, as he has read on forums that a/ the Rotman program is very, very difficult (including rumors of grade deflation) and there’s very little work-life balance and b/ he prefers in some ways the whole Montreal vibe, and it seems a bit more cosmopolitan.

My son graduated in 1999. He worked summers as an “intern” in Montréal at a company owned by the father of his friend, another Desautels student. Many others did internships in Toronto if they were not at least somewhat bilingual. Montréal is pretty much tied with Boston as the best student city in North America. For a kid from Boston it was a chance to get away from home but still be in an incredible city.
