I read an article about an incident at UC Davis involving racist and homophobic tagging in a bathroom stall. Does this kind of thing occur regularly at the school? Are people generally tolerant?

I don't think this is something that regularly occurs. In fact, I would argue that Davis is an exceedingly tolerant place in many regards (particularly in terms of sexual orientation and race). One of the guys on my floor last year would occasionally ask the girls to borrow a skirt or high heels for a party, and had no qualms walking around the dorms (and the city of Davis) in women's clothing. We all though it was great. Obviously, there will be exceptions to any rule, and it is usually these exceptions which are most notable or newsworthy. I would certainly say, though, that on the whole Davis is very open and accomodating.
