Took Spanish 2 in freshman yr of high school. Is that enough for IGETC?

Is that enough for the language other than english requirement? Specifically, I took Spanish 1 throughout middle school. Then I took Spanish 2 in freshman year of high school (passed both semesters), then took Spanish 3 my soph year and got a D first semester, then C the second semester. Am I ok or not?

If you took Spanish I in 8th grade, you should be ok.

As long as you passed three years of high school level Spanish you should be OK.

but I didn’t, I only passed up to Spanish 2! I failed a semester of Spanish 3 my sophomore year.

I still think you’ll be ok: UC only requires that you finish two years, though three is recommended.

UC and CSU are generally concerned about the highest level completed. Check your CC on how it is done for IGETC.

You need three year equivalent from high school or two year equivalent from CCC, unless I am mistaken.

It is not an admission requirement per se, but depending on your IGETC or major req, you may need it in advance, or can complete after you transfer.

The fact that you took the language courses a while back means you probably won’t really be at the level you think you are.

I guess I should elaborate. Basically if you get a C- on the last semester of HS Spanish II OR a C- in any semester of HS level III, IV, and AP, you’re proficient.

Your CC determines IGETC, so they are the ones to ask if your HS grades satisfy IGETC.

For example, my CC (SMC) requires 2 years of HS OR 1 Semester of an introductory language.

That’s interesting because as far as I have seen, IGETC certification of language is two years of college level language (which is the equivalent of three years of high school language). This is according to the UC LOTE page. I didn’t think it was determined by the CCC. But maybe I am wrong. You are usually right, luckie. Interesting.

@tehkman you must first send official HS transcripts to your CC and then they will tell you if you meet the LOTE requirement. I believe you do since your transfer major (CS? Engineering?) does not require a higher level of language.

Ok, so. I am trying to get this straight. @happy2help, So CS would be following breadth req obviously, not IGETC. I was sure under the impression you needed two years of college-level language for IGETC.

Page 3:
"FOREIGN LANGUAGE (Required for UC only) - This requirement may be fulfilled by completion of two years of one foreign language in high school with a grade of “C-“ or higher (high school transcripts must be on file at Santa Monica College) or by completion at Santa Monica College of the first semester or higher of a foreign language selected from the following courses. But what level is that class? It can’t be introductory. IMy daughter’s IGETC was just one course as well, but it was the equivalent of the second year of language. So, since she didn’t do so hot in hs, she had to take two years total at the college to reach that level course.

Re three years high school language, I was having a brain freeze. Those are the Haas requirements.

The requirement at my college (Los Angeles Pierce College) is Spanish 1, which is an elementary level course.

Yep, all level 1 classes.

Personally, I’ve taken French 1 at SMC, and felt that it was equivalent 1.5 years of HS french. So it is more advanced than HS courses, but not by much.

This is the one area that is a nightmare for me to figure out. LANGUAGE! And the international rules! The requirement at CSM is Spanish 2.

What is CSM?

I know the IGETC can vary by CC, which is why I went through SMC’s very thoughly to make sure I’d completed everything.

Yeah, that’s why for some majors that expect more language (like Haas) it’s three years high school language or two years college. They view the college as accelerated (although not in my daughter’s case)

Also, so glad SMC offers French. That’s what I took. All they have at CSM is Spanish and mandarin.

Of course, some majors have differen requirements. I’m talking strictly about SMC IGETC certification. I know majors like linguistics require 2 or more intro classes, so does internation relations, etc.

J’aime le francais langue et je veux parler plus de temps, mais personne ne parlent avec moi :frowning:
