A large part of the London Times' ranking was based on international peer assesment scores(i.e. international prestige and name-recognition). Say what you will about their ranking methodology, the peer assesment numbers that they used are certainly more accurate than guesses from people in this thread.

These are the numbers(out of 1000) that they came up with for the international prestige of various universities that I chose from their list.

UCBerkeley -- 665

Harvard -- 643

Oxford -- 560

Cambridge -- 541

MIT -- 484

Stanford -- 420

Princeton -- 353

Yale -- 347

UCLA -- 180

uh oh. a public universities is tops on the list. All the prestige whores and elitists on this board are not going to let this stand! Get ready for people to start attacking this, even though they have no basis to attack it with and is just talking out of their own anal rectums.

I thought you were going to Harvard to do a science major, I dont know about prestige whores but they do tend to make the choice you did

that just sucks

i agree, nobody can touch harvard and berkeley in terms of international prestige and name-recognition. i used to live in a little town in south america and these two universities are thought of as god-like by anyone who's anyone.

In my region, people think US has only two universities

1) Harvard;
2) non-Harvard.

So, suppose that you meet a person and tell him you are going to study in US.

"Which university is it?"

"Princeton."

"Oh, non-Harvard."

hahaha akjt. True, unfortunately : ).

Coem to think of it, stanford's right up there too...

Who the hell came up with UCAL? That is the fruitiest thing I've ever heard.

in malaysia, the single person who gets into harvard a year gets his name in the papers constantly, and attends millions of harvard alum-sponsored functions and gets cash grants from the prime minister.

for recognizability in my country:
1. harvard
2. yale/princeton
3. stanford
4. MIT
5. UPenn Wharton

no one knows what berkeley is sadly :(

I'm from England and moved to the U.S. when I was 13. When I moved, I'd for sure only heard of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and Georgetown. Everyone in England has heard of Georgetown, I couldn't tell you why but they have. Maybe because so much of its focus is on internationality? Anyway it's a hell of a lot more famous than Michigan, Chicago and some of the other schools people have put up on their lists here. Oh, and nobody has a clue what Penn is anywhere outside the U.S.

well i'm in the uk and this is what i would say for most UK people. firstly i would say:

1) Harvard
2) Yale/Princeton/MIT (all three pretty equal)

After that the Californian ones I guess, because everyone knows about california. Its just that the state as a whole is so famous so obviously its universities become more famous than perhaps they should be in the US

But in the UK scientific people see MIT as above harvard. I mean when i speak to professors at UNI they all keep saying that the ranking is:
1) MIT 2) Harvard/Yale etc... then everything else
But thats just sciency people

cause california rocks. = P

The layman hasn't heard of MIT though. At least not in my experience.

er... the layman hasnt heard of harvard though! Thats a fact! Most people in the street in UK (and all chavs) wouldnt have heard of harvard, or if they had they wouldnt care about it.

I think 99.9% of people who have heard of harvard will also have heard of yale, princeton or mit. Amongst most scientists and technicians the name MIT will be equal to harvard and more amongst the professors.
(But actually the name harvard will have become slightly more famous than it was previously because of the da vinci code)

Which is in stark contrast to the States where loads of them have heard of oxford, and a much smaller proportion will have heard of cambridge.

uWarwick - and perhaps Imperial.

MIT is probably known better than Yale or Princeton in Asia tho. MIT = brain = little Ming you better go there and be big engineer someday to make us proud! ;):D

amongst people IN THE KNOW in uk, (ie about 0.5% of the country) however, harvard is seen as the best (although the others mentioned are very respectable, and of course many US universities are great), similarly to the way that Americans IN THE KNOW might see Cambridge as being the best (whilst the others will think of Oxford :) )
But yeh I know that for Chinese and Indians, MIT is seen as VERY prestigious, because of the Science factor.
ooo btw another great university in UK is Edinburgh, its got some wicked alumni and apparently great for academics and social.

Are you going to Warwick uWarwick? I was at one point deciding between Durham and Warwick to read PPE.

im at warwick its great.
