Top 20 4yr->CCC->UC?

So...I'm new to the whole transfer process so please bear with me...

I graduated from one of the best public high schools (Los Angeles County) in 2005. The following fall I attended at top 20 private university (out of state). After the fall semester, I withdrew from the this university. So on my transcript from the university, I have transfer credit from AP exams and previous coursework from Fall 2005. There is nothing on there for Spring 2006.

Now, I have two options to continue my education 1. I have already been accepted to CSULA (4 yr public). I can go there and graduate in 3 years (of course with summers to make up for my lost semester) 2. I could attend a California community college fufilling all the basic UC transfer requirements (IGETC: English, social sciences, and some science classes, already took Diff Eq) and the requirements for my major, and then transfer to a UC (preferably UCLA) or USC.

My problem is that everything is so uncertain and ambiguous. Every UC is different. On my transcript from the previously attended 4 yr uni, it says I already have 45 semester hours. That presents a problem because I only need 60 (and will probably go over if I take classes at CC), but I haven't taken any English classes (no AP English credit) and am still lacking some social science and science classes for my major. Of the 45, more than half are from AP credit. Is the AP Credit transferable? It's probably different for each UC. So I'm so confused as to how to proceed right now.

Part of me just wants to go to CSULA and just finish off there, but what I want to achieve in life probably won't be do-able if I go there. Any advice...thanks! Feel free to PM me.

hey, have you visited cal state LA? i have a friend that goes there and ill just say right now that you are not goign to be challenged academically there. Its a commuter school and its in a bad area of Los Angeles. Anyways, was your GPA bad at your previous school? I would go to your local Community COllege and ask a counselor about your situation. I believe you can get into a UC as they take people that have at least 60 semester units and at most 90, so you are still good.

I am currently trying to transfer into a UC after spending a year at an out of state university (Ohio State) then a year at a CCC. I also have a bunch of AP credit on my transcript and as far as I understand it doesn't count toward the unit cap for transfer (which is usually 70. 60 is the required minimum).

Set up an appointment with a counselor at your local CC and they will be able to evaulate your out of state transcript and see what will apply to IGETC. They can also help you figure out what classes you need to take to finish your requirements so you don't waste time with unecessary stuff.

Every UC is NOT different as far as fulfilling IGETC goes. The CCC is responsible for IGETC certification, and they can decide to some degree what counts and what doesn't. UCs are different as far as what courses they accept for credit, but you don't really need to sweat that. If your major is not impacted, 60 units and IGETC is all you need.

To get credit for AP at a UC, I think you have to resend your AP score directly; they will ignore the testing credit.

It seems like you are deathly afraid of not graduating in four years. I had the same hang-ups when I moved here, but I decided being a little "behind" was worth it to go to a good school.

hope that helped...

read question 5 on this link. It answers your question.

hobofromdowntown: I've lived in the LA area all my life. I've visited CSULA. If I did go to CSULA, I would definitely be commuting. My GPA was not particularly low at my previous university (3.61).

wildebeest: I've already talked to a counselor at my local CC. The counselor told me it's not what the CC wants because I'm not getting anything from the CC. It's a matter of what the school I want to go to (UCs, USC) wants. So I'm in the process of contacting the UCs to ask them about the transferability (I don't think it's a word) of AP credit and my previous coursework.

coll4me: Thanks so much for the link. It was so helpful! =)

I'd go to community college. Maybe for one year if possible. I don't think u'll enjoy CSULA.
