Transfer from community college

So here's the deal... last year I was at a 4 year university and due to a variety of reasons, I didn't do well at all. I was asked to take a year off for academic probation, so this year I am at a community college. I really got my act together, I know what my major is, I have straight A's, etc.
My dream is to transfer to NYU at some point, but I don't know when the best time to do so would be, or even how I would go about that process. Since I am on Academic Probation at the 4 year college, I believe that I am still technically a student... So when NYU asks for recommendations/other paperwork from my college, should that come from my community college or the 4 year? What year would I be in If I transfer to a 4 year university at the end of this academic year?

I would appreciate some feedback from people who have gone through this process... Thanks!

I transferred from an Illinois CC to UIUC, so I can speak on that. Your letters of rec should come from people you believe will write the strongest recs. Period. Your academic standing would be based on the number of credits you come in with. If it’s a credit-hour system, generally it’s about 120 credits to graduate, so 30 would make you a sophomore and 60 would make you a junior.
