Transfer from VCCS to UVa - Chance/Advice please.

Hi, Im interested in transferring to UVa from Tidewater Community College. Going to be blunt, didn't do great in high school (also didn't flunk out, but I wouldn't have been able to get in to very many colleges with my end result), however I did graduate with an "Advanced Studies" Diploma, received 4's on AP Biology, US History, and Psychology, and also only got a 1640 on my SAT (willing to retake, cause I probably need to). I plan on going to TCC for a Fall and Spring semester and possibly summer if needed. I initially don't want to go the "Acquire an Associates Degree and get guaranteed transfer" route (mainly because I don't want to wait two+ years to get in). I want go major in Biology and my main motivation to go to UVa is because I believe it to be one of the best colleges in the country, because I absolutely need the aid (via AccessUVa, cause im poor as fudge and my parents said they won't pay) and its proximity to JMU. I can provide more info. What are my chances? Any advice? Thanks.

Unlikely. Spend two years.

Well, here’s my two cents. I transferred from PVCC. Just based off what you provided you are going to have a hard time transferring after one year. Why? Well, they are only going to have the fall semester to really look at. Even if you take 12-15 credits and get A’s they are going to be working off your high school record for the most part. Yes, you will also be able to send Spring grades half way in. My advice: take 5 classes, kick ass, and apply any way since that’s what you want. BUT set yourself up to start the GAA path. Also take the SAT again that ain’t gonna cut it.

Apply to a few colleges to keep your options open.

Thanks everyone. Im definitely going to try after one year, and if not then after two. However, my friend who is currently enrolled at UVa said I might only get “one chance” to apply. Meaning that after the first, they don’t really pay attention to your other applications for admission/transfer. Do you know if there’s any truth to this?

I’m pretty sure your friend is wrong. I followed the transfer blog for the entire year I applied, and this myth was debunked by the person running the blog.

I’m one of those who applied twice and still got in. I went the guaranteed admissions route and graduated with an Associate’s degree. I did not, however, meet all the requirements for guaranteed admissions and was wait listed. The first time I dragged my feet and didn’t get all the paperwork in on time and was denied. But I didn’t do well in high school, either. My SAT scores sucked. I kicked butt in community college, got that degree, and sold myself to the school. Granted, I’m in one of the smallest programs at the school which may have helped my chances. Biology’s going to be harder to get into. Your best option is to go for guaranteed admissions.

Happily, your friend is wrong! :)

Hi, I’m a recent transfer to U.Va!

Like you, I have not done so well in high school. In fact, I have failed miserably. I went to my community college (NVCC) and pretty much failed the first year there too. I got my act together and proceeded to get straight A’s for the next two years. Now, I applied twice. The first time I applied, I was straight up rejected. The next time I applied, I got accepted. Just make sure you fulfill all the requirements they ask of transfers, especially if you are thinking about transferring into the College of Arts and Sciences.

Good luck!
