I am currently attempting to transfer fall 2013. I was wondering if leaving a math requirement for spring was a bad thing. I am a 2 year time interval transfer. Engineering Major. Finish cal 1 (fall 2011), cal 2 (spring 2012) differential equations (summer 2012) cal 3 (fall 2012) and linear algebra (spring 2013). Will the linear algebra look really bad? Even though most students are not able to finish math requirements within 2 years?

The minimum to get accepted to a UC is one transferable math course, which you seem to have done already. It’s fine if you complete your math requirements the spring before transferring–in fact, a lot of transfers finish up their requirements the spring before transfer. You just need to make sure that when you take linear algebra that you pass it with a C or better. Also, start planning early for any alternatives if possible, because who knows–maybe you might get a late registration date and the linear algebra classes get full before you can even register. It’s happened before to some of the transfer hopefuls here, where they expected to take some courses towards their major in spring and got screwed over because the classes got filled before they could even register and they weren’t chosen off the waitlist.

Oh ok thanks, because i’ve been reading around and people have said that it is looked upon when someone is taking math their last semester before transferring. I guess it would be the minimum required math to transfer.

From the posts on this site, it appears that the transfer applicants who may have been rejected this year due to waiting until Spring to take Math had not yet taken their required transferable Math course which is a requirement that you appear to have already met. Since Linear Algebra is just a prerequisite for your major and not a course that all transfers are required to complete, you should not have any problems as long as you complete it with a C or better by the end of the Spring 2013 semester at your CCC.

one more question, is it true that most UCs are primarily GPA and pre-requisite completion based? Not saying that the personal statement and extracurriculars are not important but are much of a lower magnitude than the academic coursework itself.

A 3 on the AP stats test satisfies this requirement, correct?

@ hoping: I don’t know about other UCs, but I know that at UCD, they don’t even look at your personal statement, so that’s not a factor in their decision in accepting/rejecting people (which can be comforting for those who don’t feel comfortable with their personal statements).

@ silvertongues: check with the UC you want to transfer to.

for engineering, i may be missing one pre-requisite before i transfer for davis. I heard they were really strict about that…
