I'm currently attending De Anza Community College, and it's my 1st year here.

I want to transfer to either UCI, UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, or UCB during Fall of 2012 (meaning I want to spend no more than total of 2 years at De Anza).

I took Pre-calc in high school, but somehow placed into Math 114 (Intermediate Algebra), which is not UC transferable. Next is Pre-calc, which is transferable.

I am taking Math 114 this coming quarter (Spring 2011).

I read somewhere that in order to transfer to a UC, you MUST take a transferable math a year before you transfer.

So if I don't take Pre-calc this summer, are my chances of transferring within 2 years gone?

You just need one transferable math class and it has to be a minimum of 3 units. It has to be done by the end of the Spring term prior to transfer.

you just need to finish the math class by the spring semester before you transfer (so next spring). whether or not it’s more beneficial to finish it earlier, i’m not sure.

I think your timing is off; as @Hayward1991 said you can take the transferable math class the spring before you transfer and it probably wouldn’t hurt your chances tremendously, if at all depending on your major. You have plenty of time to take the class, so don’t worry too much about it. :)

At my CCC i was placed into an intermediate algebra course too. However, i petitioned with my high school transcript (i took pre-calculus as well and finished with Bs both semesters) and was allowed to take the transferable math class. I would suggest you try as well.

yes, but that only fulfills the igetc math requirement. if your major requires higher level math, you’ll obviously need to take it earlier than your last semester.
