I just finsihed my freshman year at NYU and am looking at Cornell for Spring 2008 entrance.

I graduated from a good public highschool 4/350, I had a 2100 SAT and 32 ACT. I had a rough freshman year (very explainable, financial/medical familial issues that is the reason I am trasnferring). I had a 3.35 in an honors program at NYU for Journalism and Middle Eastrn Studies (double major)

I also had some high powered internships in PR, journalism and film production at Sony Pictures.

1) Do I have a shot?
2) What would anyone recommend I do during this fall semester out of school? Comm college? Working? Volunteering?
3) What is better, a 32 on the ACT to submit.. or a 1340/2100 SAT. I only took the SAT once, realized it was okay for NYU and that was it. the 1340 is ****, but I don't think they would put much emphasis on the 760 writing.
4) Most importantly, how is financial aid for transfers? We are dirt poor, and i mean dirt.. but assets and stinginess kept us out of NYU financial aid.. and bad credit away from bank loans..

Any help would be really appreciated. I just found out I had to leave NYU oh.. yesterday haha.

yeah, i realize that. it scares me the most. but... i was pulled out of school all year due to frequent hospitalizations, almost deaths, mentla illnesses, cancer at home... missed midterms, paper deadlines. its not a guaranteed excuse, but it is explainable.

most professors were understanding.. the GPA is killed from one class with a C and 2 B-. the rest of my classes are all A's and A-'s.

Write some great essays…show them that you have the passion and the drive to be successful…and why Cornell is a good fit for you! IMO essays can be very important!!! and you could always complete some requirements during the fall sem. before transferring (at a cc or something)…GL! Just apply, you never know :)

I think it all depends on which school you are applying to within cornell. I also attended NYU this past year as a freshman, and I had a 3.3 after the first semester. I then applied and got accepted into CALS as a bio major. I think my essay was pretty average, and I also had many issues last year which i explained. I had similar high school stats to you as well. I think you have a good shot, depending on which school you are applying for. CAS is obviously a lot harder to get into than CALS and most of the other schools.

Oh and with financial aid, I got a fairly decent package from nyu my freshman year. But at cornell, I am getting a much better package with a lot less money in loans, and a lot more grant money.

If you are poor then you will get great aid since Cornell gives aid for 100% need. The question is what will the grant/loan ratio be...but that's more of a problem for middle class families. If you definitely need money (like it sounds) I'd guess you will get great aid.

The gpa is the thing that will hold u back, but I do believe u have a chance at breaking through if you write them about your problems. GL!!!

I'm also a current NYU student applying as a transfer to ILR for Fall'08 admission. I can tell you that a 3.3 GPA, especially for CAS, would be very low, but you could definitely pull it off with great essays and recs (I know ILR puts a heavy emphasis on the essays, not sure about CAS).

Good luck!
