Hello. I am currently an undergraduate student at a 4 year college. My gpa 1st semester was terrible(2.26) but I am retaking one of the classes, which will replace my current grade in the class so my first semester gpa should jump to a 2.76. I will most likely get a 3.6 this 2nd semester so my 1st year gpa will be around a 3.2. I am very homesick and want to transfer closer to home at Michigan State. What are my chances of getting in? When should I apply(want to transfer there 2nd semester of next year at the latest)? What more should I do to increase my chances of getting in(like taking classes in the summer to raise gpa)?
If you are going to be close to home (as in East Lansing area) for the summer, you could take classes at Lansing Community College. As long as you have not reached junior status, those credits can transfer. You do need to make sure you check online for their MSU equivalent. Why don’t you talk to an admissions rep for MSU? They can give you a better idea about what ballpark you need to be in…but I do know that MSU gets a lot of transfers. I used to advise them after they were admitted. It’s been a few years, so I won’t pretend to know the gpa expectations anymore, other than to say do your very best. It sounds to me like the gpa is partly homesickness and maybe classes that were not the right fit for you.
I will take your advice, yes the gpa was partly because of homesickness. I really had no motivation to do anything1st semester because of it, but I started therapy 2nd semester and have decided that I want to transfer so I am motivated to do my best to give me the best chance to get in.
