I will be earning 2 Associate Degrees, General Art & Science and Science Track 1 (Biological, Chemistry, Natural Science),. My GPA is 3.8, and I volunteer at a two different hospitals during the week. My counselor said that California schools accept very few out-of-state students, but will the 2 associate degrees help me in admissions to UCLA?
Thank you!
Can you afford the UCs being out of state? You would be full pay.
Will your parents pay the $60k per year to go to a UC as an OOS???
Also, are you premed?
@“Erin’s Dad” @mom2collegekids My parents have 2 years of Washington’s GET Program, where they paid for 2 years of University of Washington’s tuition an that amount can be used for multiple universities. In addition, I’ve been saving up to help pay for living expenses and books.
And I plan on going into pre-med, but I heard the process is tedious and not many students actually make it into med school

@Bubbamax do you realize that the payout EACH year to use GET at an OOS school will only cover a small part of tuition?
You seem to think the GET is going to cover the tuition at an OOS school. It will not. It won’t even come close.
OOS costs at a UC are about $60k per year.
GET will only payout about $10k per year for you to use at an OOS school or private. Where will the other $50k per year come from?
@mom2collegekids I understand that GET will pay for a very small portion, I guess in the situation I am in is that financially I can afford to go out of state, and going to a community college and living at home has been saving my family and myself a lot of money so I have to option to go out of state if I wanted to. I appreciate your concern and input, I really do. I was just also wondering if having 2 associate degrees will help increase my chances as an out of state student get into a California school.
Your “two” associates degrees need to articulate with the UC requirements.
The UC’s don’t care how many degrees you have as long as you don’t go over in units that transfer.
Here are my thoughts:
A.) There is political pressure to admit more California residents to the public universities, and the caps are beginning next year.
B.) As an OOS student, there are probably some units that might not transfer and you may have to retake some classes.
C.) Getting two AA’s might put you at a disadvantage because some universities may question why you had to earn two AA’s to meet the California requirements.
D.) It is expensive, so plan on a minimum of $120K to 180K not including travel expenses and miscellaneous expenditures.
E.) UCLA prioritizes admits: Freshman, California CC transfers, UC to UC transfers, CSU to UC’s, privates, and OOS.
