Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has advice or previous experiencest that could help me and other single mothers trying to further their education…
I have applied to UCSB, UCD, UCSC and UCLA
Major: Communications
GPA: 3.5
Pre reqs done by spring 2017
Taking 21 units this semester… feeling optimistic to get a 4.0
Should bump GPA to 3.64
I’m 25, and when I went to college straight out of High school I got a semester of bad grades and never went back, however I have an upward scale of good grades since returning 5 years later.
I am a single mother, I work, I attend school full time and I played soccer for the college team.
My personal insight questions were based on struggles from low income family, first generation college student, student athlete and being a single mother.
I was wondering if they would take into consideration my applications… does anyone current have a similar situation? Or know of someone? Just curious to see what I’m facing.
First off, I commend you for your resilience and desire to better not only your life, but also your child’s.
To answer your question, if you mean will they take into consideration your life struggles and experiences, then absolutely. You have an amazing story to me, and I think admissions will also see that upon reviewing your application. I think you have a great chance with getting into all your choices even with a “middle of the pack” GPA. Best of luck this semester and on getting that 4.00 GPA. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask away!
I think you have a good shot at all schools except Ucla. The minimum GPA for acceptance to Communications at UCLA is a 3.70. I don’t think that GPA is negotiable.
@MamabearJDM Oh, you are gonna do great! You obviously had to overcome some adversity on the way to your goal, and UCs love that stuff (dealing with adversity that is). I don’t want to offend anyone here, but most transfers I know lived a very sheltered life and have nothing to write about (on the subject of adversity, leadership, extra curriculars). You’ve got a great story there - use it in your personal statements.
Also, some UCs you listed probably have TAG for your major, UCD should. Try to tag the most competitive one, as TAG generally requires lower GPA, than regular admission. Deadline for TAG is September 30.
