Transferring from a community college with a W

I'm a community college student in California planning to transfer to UC Berkeley or UCLA as an Electrical Engineering major. I'll be applying this upcoming Fall and it looks like I'll have a W on my transcript. How bad will this look?

I'm currently taking Discrete Mathematics and English composition during the 6-week Winter intersession, and I'll have to drop the English course because I really don't have enough time to research and write essays. The English course is part of the required transfer courses which is listed as English R1B for Berkeley and "One additional course in English composition" for UCLA on assist.org.

How bad will a W for this course look considering that it's not related to Engineering (Math/Physics/etc) yet it is a required course?

My GPA at the time of application will be around 3.93 without this English course. There's a chance that I will have no extracurricular activity.

Thanks

By “without this English course”, I mean: without having a non-A grade pull my GPA down. There is absolutely no way I’ll get an A for that class…I’ll be retaking it later though.

As long as you take it eventually (and possibly even get an A in it) you’re good to go. Take the W if you know you’re not going to do well in the course. UCs apparently don’t care about Ws.
Try to do some ECs. They will help you!

I agree with deanzatransfer, take the W if you are going to get a poor grade in the class. 1, 2, or even 3 W’s will really not put much of a negative effect on your UC application. They just do not want to see several W’s and/or multiple W’s for the same subject.

So when you do retake the class, DO NOT get another W in it. I have heard that multiple W’s in the same subject can effect your application negatively.

I dropped two courses before, also due to time restraints, but they were both dropped before the “Last day to drop without a W” deadline. Do classes that have been dropped before the deadline still show up in records?

They were Computer Science courses.

No, classes dropped before the deadline don’t show up on your transcript. It’s as if you never attended the class.

I have a question i really din’t know how to use this site but I was wondering if anyone knew do science majors put great emphasis on english because my major is bioengineering and I have hope to trasfer to a Uc i was always great at science and amth so there is no problem for me to get a’s in those subjects but i sadly got a c in english 101 and 102? does dis jeopordize from me to getting into a uc because most of my requirements are math classes and science, would it matter if i get a c in 2 english classes which is only 10 percent of what i have to complete out of everything? even with the cs is hould accumulate at least a 3.5 or higher g.p.a when im done

bro I had two W’s and I got in. one was in a major prereq too.

pretty much you have to see it as this: if you think you won’t get into Berkeley because of a W, your application must not be that strong overall

I had 7 Ws and I got into both (granted, not for engineering). I had some legit reasons for a few of them, but 2 of the Ws were for the same class in different quarters (eventually made it up).

I had 3 W’s and an R and I got into both of them. One W is not going to be an issue.

19 Ws. But my kidney failed.

i heard if you have less than 3 w’s you should be fine, but be ready to explain why you have each w.
