transferring from W&M to UVA, low gpa

I am a second semester freshman at the College of William and Mary and I'm applying to transfer to UVA. I have excellent reasons for transferring:

-major isn't offered here (want to do biochem which is available at UVA)
-availability of research facilities (I would like to participate in research programs)
-availability of university hospital where I could work to garner some premed experience
-availability of Polish language and history classes (I am of Polish decent)
-social reasons

The problem is that I only have a 3.0 after first semester (straight Bs). But I did take two difficult, weed out premed classes (bio and chem), and I scored a 1510 on the old SAT (2290 on the new one). I also took 5 aps in high school and did well (4s and 5s) on the exams, and my gpa for the last two years of HS is around a 3.7-3.8 (probably a 3.5 overall) I was also the number one ranked bass clarinetist in VA my junior year, I went to governor's school for French, and I did various extracurriculars. Im pretty sure I have completed all my transfer requirements too (writing, language, etc.) In college I have joined a few extracurricular organizations (young dems, meditation club, rugby, fraternity). With my solid reasons for transferring, my test scores, my extracurricular accomplishments et al., do I have a chance of getting in despite my not-so-hot gpa?

Oh yeah im also taking organic chem, cell bio, calc II, and a freshman seminar this semester. obviously not ******** classes.

were you previously admitted to UVa as a high school student?

nah, i was rejected...my hs gpa was just too low for nova. i had three C+'s. however the admissions lady did say that I would make an excellent transfer applicant. but im still apprehensive about my 3.0

help me out! what do yall think?

I think you have a chance. W&M has pretty widely acknowledged grade deflation, so maybe that might shed some better light on your GPA. Your recs and quality of essays are probably pretty important. Send in your midterm grades, assuming they're better than that 3.0. I sent mine in last year; called the admissions office and asked if sending those in would be detrimental or annoying, to which they answered no.

Can anyone else offer any insight?

3.0 is very weak

you have good high school stats so you have a shot.

it won't hurt to apply but transfer dean roberts did tell me that competitive applicants have a 3.4+

bump bump bump anyone else? it says on the site that "successful applicants will have earned a B average or better."

what kind of insight are you looking for?

you don't have a great chance - just apply

you'll find out soon enough

hey, I'm applying to UVA from W&M too.
The average GPA for freshman @ W&M is 3.08, so I wouldn't feel too badly about yours...personally i'm applying with a 3.15.
