Transferring into a major with no CC-offered pre-requisites...

I am an incoming Classical Civilisation major, admitted to UCSD and applied to Cal, UCLA, and UCD.

Neither the specific Community College I attended, nor any other institution I could locate, offered any of my major's pre-requisite courses; I was forced to settle for taking transferable courses which loosely covered similar material. Indeed this has not proven a barrier to admissions, but the prospect of spending a not-inconsiderable amount of time taking these classes is fairly unattractive. My counsellor suggested that it is possible to appeal to the Classics department, using the Student Learning Outcomes of my various CC courses, and perhaps have a few of the requirements satisfied.

How difficult should I expect this process to be? Are departments typically stingy with this sort of business?

Any comments are rather appreciated!

Hey! Classical civ is my minor! Anyway, you typically are not penalized by UCs for failing to complete prereqs that simply aren’t available at your CCC; however, because admissions to schools like Cal and UCLA is so competitive, they will sometimes expect that you locate a CCC nearby and take prereqs there.

Looking at assist.org, however, it appears that the major prereqs are not listed with any corresponding CCC classes. When transfer prep is articulated, but the classes aren’t offered by a CCC, assist.org will show the classes in one column and something to the effect of “no courses articulated” in another. What this indicates is that there is no classical civ major transfer prep that can be completed at CCC; that being said, you should really call each campus and confirm that information. If that is the case, then you should simply do all your GE and IGETC/L&S breadth requirements prior to applying.

Salve!

I’ve spoken at least with a counsellor at Cal, who confirmed that there was no bias in the case of Classical Civilisation because the pre-requisites are not articulated anywhere. I was admitted to the Classics major at UCSD without any pre-reqs, as well; my question was more regarding appeals to have pre-reqs satisfied by a course (or a basket of courses) which generally satisfy their scope.

CAL is the way to go imo

Oh, oh, oh. Gotcha! My mistake! It would seem to me that you cannot petition to count the courses you’ve already taken at CCC toward major prereqs; as is evidenced by the lack of transfer prep available, it would seem that Cal prefers that you do your Classical Civ coursework there.
