Hey guys,
This is my first time posting on this thread, so any response would be very much appreciated. I am an incoming Freshman going to college for the 2019-2020 school year. I have always wanted to go to Umich Ann Arbor, however, I was deferred and then rejected. I would very much like to attend Umich ASAP. I am thinking about applying for the winter semester, however, it is very unlikely that I am going to accepted because I do not have any college grades available. I would end up applying with my High school stats, 1320 SAT and 3.6 GPA. Which didn’t get me accepted in the first place. I was thinking of maybe transferring to one of the UM campuses (Flint or Dearborn). What should I do to increase the chance of my acceptance. I am applying for LSA computer Science. I am also going to try for the fall 2020-2021 semester in which I will be sophomore, but I was thinking of maybe taking all the chances I have so that’s why I am applying after one semester of college. But I am also hoping I can get in as a sophomore.
I agree acceptance is highly unlikely as a transfer during winter, as one needs at least 30 credits (soph standing) upon transfer. https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/transfer-students Looks like you have some research to do.
Where will you be attending college in the fall? Are you a Michigan state resident?
@Mwfan1921 I will be attending Kettering University and Yes, I am a Michigan Resident. I figured that I will most likely be admitted if I was a Sophomore, but what kind of stats should I have. Should I considered transferring to one of the UM campuses?
The closer you have to 60 credits as a transfer, the less UMich will use your high school stats in evaluating your application. https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/transfer-students/requirements-deadlines-0
Because they already have rejected you once, if you want to apply as a soph with around 30 credits, you will need a very high GPA at Kettering…and even then I don’t think your chances are on the ‘likely’ side, but no one really knows.
I can’t answer your question about transferring to a Michigan directional sooner rather than later…I assume you are implying that perhaps more courses would transfer from those schools than Kettering? I would do as much research as you can on this, and make sure all the courses you take at Kettering will transfer including those that will fulfill the LSA CS requirements: https://lsa.umich.edu/lsa/academics/majors-minors/computer-science-major.html
Here is where you can research equivalencies: https://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx
Once you have a good understanding of this information, you will be able to speak with a UMich transfer admissions officer and plan out your curriculum (and possibly make the decision to transfer to a directional state school). UMich runs Transfer Tuesdays where admissions staffers will help you understand what courses will transfer. At some point, you should attend one of those Tuesdays.
Good Luck.
Great advice above. Please make sure all your classes Transfer. I don’t think they might even from one of their directionals. When taking classes always get the OK from Ann Arbor if that is your goal.
BTW-Kettering is awesome.
@Mwfan1921@Knowsstuff Yes! There are a lot of classes that don’t transfer. Such as all the Computer Science classes at Kettering. None of the classes there transfer, that is why I think that transferring to maybe a Umich school would allow more credits to transfer. I could probably take all the transfer classes this school year at Kettering. I would of course try to get good grades and maybe join clubs to increase my chances, also maybe doing a lot of community work to possibly make up, for my HS stats?
What do you think of that?
You have to look at this school by school and course by course, same as you did for Kettering. U Mich is notoriously bad at giving credit for courses taken elsewhere (aside from CCs where articulation agreements exist).
What does this mean…are you talking about gen eds? If so, again make sure U Mich will give you credit for them.
Community service is good, but won’t make up for HS stats, especially after only one year of college. I am not an expert in this and defer to the UMich transfer admissions folks, but having two years of a very high college GPA will give you a greater chance to transfer than after just one year. Significantly greater weight will be placed on your HS GPA and standardized test scores after only one year of college as compared to two years.
Also keep in mind that depending on your major Kettering has co-ops, which is great, but might take you away from taking classes you need to transfer.
Call today to Michigan and get the information your seeking.
If transferring into like engineering there are specific requirements and if Kettering classes don’t Transfer you might be retaking classes. If you don’t want Michigan looking at your high school transcript and scores then you have to transfer as a junior credit wise
I’m not a transfer admissions expert, but I think you can some answers about transfer admissions from past (and current) “UMich transfer” threads here on CC:
