Transferring

Hey,

So i'm a high school senior and I'm attending SUNY Geneseo next year.
My GPA is ~97%, 7 AP's all 5's, 2100 SAT, 740 SAT2's on math and bio, extra curr. office positions, you get the picture.
I applied to very few schools because i was sure i was going to get my top choice (UChicago/Vassar), so i didn't bother with the safeties much. However, i was obviously wrong. I want to transfer out of Geneseo to Columbia after one year (no, i didn't apply to columbia as a senior, i wanted to get out of NYC, but my life has drastically changed in the past 2 months which almost requires me to stay in NYC). I know it's ridiculously hard and that is why I'm asking for any tips on how to make it out. I know a couple of students that transfered to Columbia but i see no trends emerging in their applications, perhaps the only thing Columbia is looking for is uniqueness? Help, please.

All you can do is the best you can do in your classes, then cross your fingers and hope. If you’re really going to be unhappy at Geneseo, maybe you should look at other options too? It’s really hard to transfer after just a year because all the schools really have to go on is one semester of college work. I would not get your hopes up.

Oh, I’m def. applying to at least 7 schools as a transfer. But is there anything i can do to stand out? I’m sure that all tranfers are going to have 3.7-4.0 GPA’s. I’m taking ACT in September and going for a 34 (previously achieved on practice tests). I’m also working with a well known IT company this summer. Anything else?

Thanks, btw.

If you’re set on staying in NYC, apply to NYU and some other schools of similar caliber, in addition to Columbia. As you probably already know, Columbia transfer admission is a crapshoot for just about anyone.

As I feel compelled to point out every time someone touts NYU, their financial aid policies are simply terrible. If your parents can’t shell out $50,000 per year, cross it off your list.
