If I want to go out to the metropolitan area and airport (including NYC and Boston) for internship/research/job/break or even for leisure activities, what are the transportation options and how much money and time would it cost?

I believe Dartmouth now has their own Dartmouth Coach that goes to some cities. To NY…I think its about 5 hours. Costs, you can check out online.

There’s an Amtrak station a few miles away from campus. Fares and schedules vary, but you can find out on the Amtrak website.

I don’t know anything about flying in and out.

The Dartmouth Coach goes to Logan Airport and South Station in Boston… it’s either $60 one-way or $60 round-trip… idr. The ride is 2 hrs to South Station and 2 1/2 to Logan (includes wait times). Now, it depends on where you fly out to from there. There’s a very, very small airport in Lebanon and a somewhat bigger one in Manchester as well.

The Coach has a new line going to NYC, I think… the ride is obviously longer… but you can check that out for yourself. There’s also an Amtrak station in WRJ, if you’d rather take that.

I wouldn’t bother with the coach to NYC – it’s crazily expensive. Amtrak is horrid for trips to NYC – you spend about twice as long on the train as you would if you took the bus, even if you make a stopover in Boston. There are cheap buses from Boston to NYC like Lucky Star and BoltBus so I’d spring for those.

Actually the Dartmouth Coach to NYC is comprably priced to what it used to cost to ride greyhound from NYC to hanover about 5 years ago and it looks like a much nicer ride.

Sometimes, it is also about putting value on your time, paying for convienence and paying for a quality of life. yes, one can take the dartmouth coach to boston and catch a $20 greyhound or a $15 china town bus to NYC.

based on the current pricing the Dartmouth coach to Boston is $33 one way by the time you add in the $15 -20 to catch the bus to NYC, you are talking 48-53 one way. Now factor in getting through south station, going to connect to another bus, hoping to get a seat on a bus with a high ridership and the not most comfortable ride. It is still going to take you ~ 6 hours to get to NYC, so there is no time savings. For me (YMMV) it is worth $20 to one stop shop - get on the bus in Hanover, and spend my 5 hours in comfort.

If the value of your time is 20 bucks or more an hour, it’s a good deal I suppose - there are naturally circumstances under which the direct coach to NYC makes sense (if you have a lot of luggage that would make changing buses at South Station impractical, for instance). But I think for a lot of students, the Dartmouth Coach is a tad pricey. I’ve used BoltBus several times and it’s pretty good – you can reserve a seat in advance, it’s priced the same as Chinatown buses, free wifi, comfortable seating, and buses are often faster than the announced schedules.
