Transportation: Cars, bikes, motorcycles, scooters?

How are you getting around at school?

I'm looking at schools in Stockton, CA, OR, RI, MA and NJ. Will a motorcycle be sufficient (and practical) in getting around these places or should I get a car and/or bike?

Mines in the city, so im using my feet and public transportation

Well in NJ a motorcycle wouldn't be very practical. I'd suggest a car if you plan on moving around a lot. However, depending on the school, a bike would do fine.

Since im an intel i have no clue about this - How much does a bike cost?

a decent, rugged mountain bike can run you about $300

I have a trusty old 1988 Acura Legend.

^Whats up with u always posting ur cars and what year they are?

Cars change every year, and sometimes the changes between periods of time is radically different. Look at a Honda Accord from the early 1980s and compare it to a 2006 and you'll see what I mean...the old Accords were compact cars that competed with the likes of the Chevy Citation. The new Accords are much bigger, more luxurious, etc.

In the case of the Legend, the sedans before 1988 had smaller and less reliable engines and the 1989-1990s had a different rear end. I guess if you're a car freak like me you want more details.

Big cities (ex. Boston U): Feet, subway, bus, and occasional cab
Smaller cities (ex. Brown): Feet, bus, car if you REALLY insist on it
Small suburb (ex. Rutgers-New Brunswick): Feet, Bus, car if you insist
Middle of Nowhere (ex. Williams): Feet, Car, Something with a motor & on wheels

If everything goes well, I'll be at NYU by late August of 2007, and therefore I will buy myself a fat $400 MetroCard.

why would u buy a $400 metrocard..one i dont think its possible and if it is and u lose it...wow alot of money gone to waste. im 99.9% sure MTA has a option where you pay a certain amount and you can get unlimited rides for the month...Also you can reload when your money runs out.

no i just think you like to brag about what kinda cars you have

I'm going to live in a city so I'll go by foot and public transportation.

California will require a car because things aren't always concentrated and transportation isn't so good in most areas. You should check out the Stockton area - I'm speaking for most of SoCal and what I've seen of middle and NorCal.

How is driving an 18 year old car bragging? It's not like I've got a 2006 Acura RL. My car doesn't even have an airbag! But hey, transportation is transportation.

I get around by foot!!

Packing isn't so bad. Put all your stuff in grocery bags since boxes will be scarce and load it into your trunk/truck/minivan/SUV/moving van/U-Haul. If you think you have a lot call both parents so they can both bring cars up. When I moved out of my dorm I filled up a 2004 Toyota Highlander with all the seats down and the trunk and every spare seat of a 2006 Honda Civic. I really needed a U-Haul. It fit better going up because we took a 2004 Honda Accord instead of that Civic.

i apologize for wrongfully saying that you brag about cars.

i know about old cars too...i used to drive a 1987 nissan stanza (older than me and nissan doesn't even make them anymore)

Any time I hear the name 'nissan stanza' i think of Tony Danza.

saketm - most people that I know get a cheap second hand bike - you don't want to spend 300+ and then get your wheels stolen, etc. Bike theft is really common, actually - it's the most common crime on the Stanford campus, for example...and I'm sure it is here at UCSD as well. Cheap bikes are also less attractive to thieves, so...

:)

i think of poems :)

skateboard.

Subways. College students are huge users of public transpo, especially in big cities. We have our own 'L' station. Tis nice.
