Transportation from Ithaca to New York City

I know there's Cornell's campus 2 campus bus which is 150$ for a roundtrip and is supposed to be really nice but that leaves at 5:30 AM and 11:30 AM on Friday and I have class until 2PM.

I'd like a bus that left at night or as late as possible on Friday. So I can wake up at home on Saturday and take care of some stuff.

Also, for future reference: With my situation aside, what are all of the options that New Yorkers have for transport from Ithaca to NY and back. Please supply links if possible for timings, prices, etc.

Um... it's called the Internet. Learn how to use it.

Cornell University - CUinfo - Transportation, Travel, and Lodging

Hey Jay1020... how has your housing situation worked out?

apparently, it's too damn hard for kids these days to just put in "New York City to Ithaca" into google.

The bus service is the f-ing first hit on the list.

Learn to use the internet.

Of course Apple it is going to be hard for them to do that considering they want to go to NYC from Ithaca.

Shrimp.

Anyways, past experience has shown me better deals are found through boards than Google.

I'd Greyhound it.

Greyhound Home

See?

As opposed to what I did, which was give the link to all sorts of links. Shortline! Greyhound! Ithaca Airport! Elmira Airport! Amtrak! Rideboard! Craigslist!

Two things.

1) If you can read, he said "for transport from Ithaca to NY and back"."

2) If you had a somewhat functioning brain, you would be able to immediately see that you can pick your route on the bus company's website to go between NYC and Ithaca from either direction.

lol wow can everyone relax? a simple damn question turned into name calling and a debate.

As for the housing situation, the townhouses worked but that was because they put all the transfers here; I didn't know that beforehand. The best part is that my roommate never moved in so I pretty much have this huge room to myself. The TCAT bus is also extremely close and takes me to class in <10-12 minutes. The bus stop is only 3-4 buildings away from the ILR building. The dining hall is across the street. Downer is that the bus pretty much stops working after 6:40PM so I try to get back to North campus before that, otherwise you have to wait for half hour intervals or end up walking. A good amount of stuff worked out but I think I still might have preferred West. I have a friend who is going to move out of his single in Hans Bethe and asked me if I wanted it but I'm only going to take that option if I get a roommate here because I pretty much have a single.

The downside is that making friends might be a bit more difficult since you need to go outside and knock on their townhouse doors to talk to them as opposed to an open dorm floor. Another downer is that you have to really get along wiht your roommates. There's one guy in my TH that keeps putting the thermostat up to 78 in the middle of summer and refuses to turn it down, but in return he did some stuff for me so, yea, you have to deal with BS stuff like that. I'll make a formal, longer post about the townhouses later. I have some ILR reading to do...(they weren't kidding about this "I Love Reading" acronym).

Funny, as the walk between Ives and RPU shouldn't take more than 10-12 minutes either.

There was absolutely no name calling in this thread either.

It takes approx 15-18. The bus def sheds a good amount of time + the general effort of walking that distance at 8AM.

You walk slowly then. It is 0.6 miles between North Campus and Ives. Even at 20 minutes a mile, it isn't going to take a person walking at normal speed more than 15 minutes to cover the distance. And that is going slow.

Do you plan on working in a city after you graduate? Maybe New York or Boston or DC or Chicago or San Francisco or London?

Then you better learn to stop whining and start to enjoy one of the nicest walks in America.

Otherwise get a bike.

Shortline bus seems to be a good deal, 40 dollars one way to NYC. I'm trying it out tomorrow. I already tried the Campus to Campus one, and it was pretty good with snacks and stuff but it's 75 one way. I don't think it's worth it, especially if you sleep while you're on the bus.

Rent a car? I read somewhere the state of New York allows it for 18 year olds.

And AppleMuncher, Greyhound has special fares for those within the NY state area. Blow it out your muncher.

You can rent a car in NYS...but if you're under 25 you're only permitted to rent certain types of vehicles and can be subject to an additional per day fee...I think NYS allows car rental companies to charge up to an additional $70 per day if the renter is under 25.

Car rentals really aren't that economical for students. To get from Ithaca to NYC....your best bet is the Shortline bus or hitch a ride.

Age discrimination is a *****.

Yeah....it stinks. As an NYS resident under the age of 25 my car insurance is through the roof (even though I've never had so much as a parking ticket). But...to quote a clip from my local newspaper "as New York residents it's our right to pay more for everything."

"Shortline bus seems to be a good deal, 40 dollars one way to NYC. I'm trying it out tomorrow"

hey battlecruiser -- how did your cornell to nyc trip on shortline go?

I took the shortline bus on Friday and got back sunday night.

My experience:
So in order to get a ticket for the shortline, you have to buy it in person at two locations.
You can either buy a one-way ticket for 40 bucks from Cornell's Student Agencies location (or 72 for roundtrip) or for 50 bucks at the bus terminal. Word of advice: if you want the discounted tickets, buy them well in advance because it closes at 6:30. I personally dont think the 8 bucks is worth walking from north to collegetown and back, but whatever.

If you buy from student agencies, you must go on friday and come back on sunday or monday, which was a pain bc I wnated to party on friday and take the 1am bus Saturday morning, which isn't Friday. It's either that or the 6pm friday bus. The bus pulls up to RPCC on north campus, everyone gets on, it drives to the bus terminal deeper in ithaca so everyone can get off and buy tickets. you buy your ticket, get back on and then it heads back to NY but makes a stop to binghamton. Sleeping on the bus is difficult bc the seats are upright and don't really recline. If you sleep at the window side you can bring a hoodie and then bunch it up to make a pillow and try to sleep.

It drops you off at port authority in NY, i took a taxi to penn, took the lirr home. my total for one way was something like 50 bucks for the shortline, 6-7 bucks for the taxi, 6 bucks for the lirr, so roughly 62 one way.

It was ok, but I couldn't get any work done on the shortline. I think im going to try the cornell bus too.

um, u can take the shortline straight to wherever u're heading
it usually drops me off at exit 49 and I live in exit 53, not a big deal

Turtle - isn't that just for breaks?
