Transportation from SF to Davis?

UC Davis recently changed their requirement for Photocopy of U.S. citizenship papers for financial aid, and now they said that I have to bring the real documents to their office.

However, I have no idea how to go there though public transportation.
Since I am only turning in a piece of paper then going back to San Francisco, I don’t want to bother anyone to drive me there. Plus I will have to know how to get there in the future anyway.

So, I did a bit of research online and found out that the best way to get there would be to take Bart to Richmond, then take Amtrak to Davis. The total cost of trip is $30 and coming back to SF will be another $30.

I think this is too expensive considering that I will only stay at Davis for 2 hour at most.

If anyone has any wise advices, please let me know.

Also, if Amtrak is the best way, do I have to buy the tickets online?

In my opinion, amtrak is the best way if you don’t have any other means to get to Davis. And no you don’t have to buy the tickets online, you can just go to the station and buy them from there.
