Hey,

I just saw PR's rankings and saw that Trin College is extremely homophobic? Would a LGBT member be threatened just being on campus? Does this homophobia indicate that the school has a considerable conservative slant?

Hey,

I just saw PR's rankings and saw that Trin College is extremely homophobic? Would a LGBT member be threatened just being on campus? Does this homophobia indicate that the school has a considerable conservative slant?

There are student run clubs and organizations that are in place for LGBT students to join and use, and they put on events around campus to raise awareness. I have never heard of anyone on campus that has a serious problem with LGBT students. There are some here, but they are not a huge part of the campus demographics, but I don’t think they are at any college. As far as left or right wing, I’d say that the campus is pretty split between the two sides. I definitely wouldn’t say that the student body is homophobic.

I am sure Thebuff91 is mostly right. This is probably a case of a few bad apples and isolated incidents. But, taken in context with the overall pattern of news about Trinity, it seems like those bad apples are gradually spoiling the barrel for a student population of whom the majority are probably quite normal, tolerant, and generous in spirit.

Initially Trinity was in my top 10 list to apply for fall 2014, as a well-ranked school that explicitly caters to non-traditional-age students like myself.

Then I read about all of this:

…and the Student’s Guide To Colleges describes a culture of elitism, intellectual apathy, and social insularity.

Granted, you will find all of the above at any school in some small measure. But to find it all within the past couple of years, within such a small student body? I have a hard time believing that I could go there and find the culture of actively-practiced civility and insatiable inquiry that I would expect from a top liberal arts college.

That is disappointing, because the school rests upon a legitimate reputation for excellence. They’ve produced some great minds in the past, and I am sure they continue to do so. However, I also get the impression that a long, slow slump is underway.

I want to be at a school that implicitly challenges me, that calls me to a higher standard than I have ever yet set for myself. And I worry that at Trinity, I would be the higher standard.

I remain open to being disabused of that interpretation, because you can’t believe everything you read in the news or on the Internet. But at present, the weight of the evidence has me looking elsewhere.

For the most part, no one is too disparaging based on sexual preferences. There is one frat that is known for being aggressively homosexual if that tickles your fancy.

I would agree that these incidents are cases of a few bad apples, and its too bad that it makes my school come off as homophobic. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time year so far (Im a junior). I have always been a motivated student striving for challenges and excellence, and I love my classes, my professors, and my community. As my brother is gay, I am an avid supporter of LGBT rights and know that there is a lot of diversity on our campus. Our administration will not tolerate acts of hate and discrimination.

As a current student I find that it is definitely an expectation for students to be tolerant and accepting of the LGBT community. I often see pride flags hanging out of windows, and we have resources such as the Queer Resource Center (QRC) and an organization called EROS - Encouraging Respect of Sexualities. They hold different events to promote awareness and foster a friendly and fun environment no matter one’s sexuality. Here is the link to the EROS Facebook page, you can check it out and start a conversation with someone in the group if you like!

Wow seriously? Then why does Princeton Review consistently rank Trin Coll as one of the most LGBT unfriendly colleges? Those rankings are based on student responses you know. It is disgusting to know that people at least have homophobic attitudes (I realize that attitude may not translate to behavior).

I completely agree that having homophobic attitudes is terrible, and I try to be very aware to make sure acts of hate are not being committed around me. I think that people keep those opinions to themselves because I don’t see LGBT related vandalism in dorms or things said in public, nor do I have any friends that feel that way.
