Trying to transfer to a good university after dismissal

Hello,

i have a question. In 2014, I enrolled at Michigan State University. Unfortunately, I did very poorly at this school. Was recessed in the summer along with gaining 70 pounds and then appealed and got back in. Then I got dismissed three semesters after enrollment. I essentially failed all my classes and a couple Ds and one A out of the whole bunch. I then go to a CC and I have a 3.45 currently. Given that I have a relatively good GPA do i have a good chance of transferring to a good university?

Define “good university.”

But in general, yes, if you meet all the transfer requirements. Which you can find on each school’s website.

i live in California, i have made friends with a lot friends with folks at USC. they tell me to be more engaged in volunteer work so at my old job i did alot of free Public Relations for foundations, free press releases, events, and etc. I have applied to a bunch of private universities along with CSUs and UCs.

Any school considering your application would be looking for a few specific things beyond your current better grades at cc. And the more evidence you can provide that reassures them, the more likely it is that they’ll accept you. They’d want to know that you identified what was interfering with your achieving at reasonable levels at your old school, that you have taken steps to ensure that those (or new) reasons are no longer and will not be operative in the future and that their school isn’t likely to present factors that would interfere with your achieving at their school.

This has calmed me down tremendously thank you so much!

Is USC an actual chance for me?

That’s a Q for the Chances forum, but any informed answer will need a lot more info.

Is 3.45 your cumulative or just your community college GPA? If the latter, the chances at USC are low since it has become quite selective over the past 10 years or so.

3.45 is my community college gpa

You need a few more semesters at the CC maintaining that GPA - ideally you’d apply after earning 45 credits or so, with a 3.5+ GPA. You’re on the right track, now you need to demonstrate your ability consistently and earn the right credits for your major.

i have 47 credits completed but the last two semesters i have earned a 3.67. whihc has brought my gpa up i have consistiently gotten better every semester i have been in

i am aiming for a 4.0 this semester so i can show that i am indeed ready for the next level

You are on a great track. congratulations on turning things around as you have. I knew of someone with a similar background to the one you describe. She finished up her BA at a 4 year school but didn’t stop there. She continued on, got her PhD and was a faculty member at a university for many many years. Keep it up, you’re doing great!

thank you very much sir, i have lot of friends that helped me get back to who i was but just a better version. I Loved USC and most of older friends graduated from USC. This is where i want to go. i hope and pray that the admission rep had a great day. i’m currently doing the finishing touches to my essays

USC accepts many transfer students from CA CC’s, but it takes some effort on your part. Their website has very specific information that you should read carefully. Contact your USC admissions counselor to make sure you have everything in order. Good luck!

Thank you!

This should give you hope: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/2121697-commun-college-transfers-at-the-elites-higher-grad-rates-than-1st-time-freshmen-other-transfers.html#latest

what?! This is incredible. This has really calmed my nerves tremendously. Thank You!!

Keep getting A’s. The average GPA for 'SC transfers is a 3.7.
