Tulane Class of 2023

Hey guys! I just saw my gibson portal update with today’s date as a time stamp saying that my FA has been revised and that I need to accept the terms and conditions again but I don’t see any changes in the amount of FA given on my portal, what could this mean?

@elodyCOH My daughter had a 4.12 (now is 4.2) and 32ACT (33SS), 12 APs, passed all AP tests taken so far (7), over 600 hours community service, all state tennis, lots of ECs, great essays (I thought), and was deferred from Tulane. She did get into the OleMiss honors college though. Weird. She had some friends with higher stats who were waitlisted to OM honors. We visited OM honors weekend and a rep stated that they put a lot of emphasis on the essay. I didn’t think my D’s was that great. The OM honors admit is more baffling to me than Tulane admittance.

@zgreen247 - most likely you got the shopping sheet updated with the cost of attendance and they want you to consent that you read the terms and conditions. Check the shopping sheet.

@Goose15 where is the shopping sheet and what is it?

@tmeg01 Is your daughter going to accept Ole Miss? My son got a hefty scholarship there that he’s declining due the waitlist to SMBHC. They keep e-mailing him asking him to reconsider. I think it was his essay that kept him out of honors at Ole Miss. He took a chance and wrote a pretty quirky essay (though that is his personality). I think Ole Miss is looking for a specific type. I noticed that most of the honors students were girls and liberal arts students who were really into pursuing social causes. Not too many were engineering students that we met. My son’s passion is more about science and research, he’s not a great social mover and shaker. Perhaps he just didn’t fit with their vision for the program.

probably

The shopping sheet is in the Financial Aid section in Gibson. It is the third tab. It gives the information about your Cost of Attendance (Tuition, Room and Board) and Aid awarded.

When doubles are converted to triples in Wall, they still have the “suite-style” bathroom that is shared with the room on the other side of the bathroom. I think Tulane’s goal would be to have a triple share a bathroom with a double rather than with another triple, but maybe that doesn’t always happen. My daughter was assigned to a triple (class of 2021), but at the last minute (late July) the third girl ended up in another triple and so my daughter ended up with a double. The rooms are pretty big thankfully, so I think she would have been OK. Hope that helps!

Son who was deferred EA with excellent stats was admitted yesterday everting with a significant scholarship annually.

@Bayeriffic Congrats to your son!! That’s awesome!!
My D is also deferred from EA round. How did your son hear that he was admitted?

@Goose15 My third tab on the Gibson Portal is my To Do list that doesn’t give me any details on costs

@Bayeriffic Congrats to your son! I’m really surprised he heard already. I thought everyone would be waiting until late March. My D is also deferred from EA with high stats. I heard about one other applicant also getting in last night (might be your son). Was there anything unique about his circumstances that led to his “off cycle” acceptance? Just curious. Thanks.

I think that once your need based aid has been determined by the financial aid office, then you get the new tab in Gibson with the shopping sheet. My understanding is that merit aid is announced with the acceptance and the need based aid (if you applied) shows up later. Financial Aid has this time schedule on their website: http://www2.tulane.edu/financialaid/steps/ugrad.cfm It seems like EA kids should start to hear about need based aid this week (starting 1/22/19) Hope this helps.

@elodyCOH My D is still waiting on other colleges for decisions, so she doesn’t know yet. We both liked OM, the town, and the fact a lot of the kids are from OOS. I’m gobsmacked at the honors college acceptances. Her good friend whose parents are huge alums, his sister is the president of the OM student body and an active honors college student was waitlisted. He has a 32 ACT, 4.1 gpa. My S (who is a sophomore at U of Miami) was accepted in 2017 to the SMBHC with a 4.3 gpa, 28 ACT, while his engineering friend with a 33 ACT, 4.3 gpa was denied. At the honors weekend the SMBHC rep said the essay was very important, and that the current honors students had input into the applications. The prompt was “what should we remember” and he said they were looking for world wide issues, such as genocide, election stealing, etc. My heart sank because my daughter’s essay to the topic was about her transferring high schools. I think the honors college does itself a disfavor by waitlisting instead of deferring these kids who are obviously very academically talented. So many won’t take the gamble of getting it through a waitlist.

My D is a finance major and planing to have a minor in stats. She likes the homeland security minor at Ole Miss which puts it on her radar. She is social, but kind of shy. She likes the idea of a large school with lots of opportunity, but she can also fly under the radar. I’m sure your S will be fine where ever he goes. The kids we know at OM love it, and it’s a well run school from what we hear.

@tmeg01 It’s good to hear that there are others with similar stats to my son getting waitlisted. It seems more boys and engineers in that boat. My son wrote a philosophical essay on what it is that we remember by what is important to us at various stages in our lives. It was well-written, it had funny parts in it, but it was clearly not what they were looking for if they wanted humanitarian sort of responses. He didn’t take it personally, but it was disappointing, as he really loved Oxford and the campus. He has other options, so he’s not sweating it, thankfully. We’re hoping for a miracle with financing for Tulane. We hope they love his essays in New Orleans!

@collegemom111111 nothing at all unique applied EA, deferred then was very surprised by what happened.
Don’t give up hope-they’re obviously coming out. My son didn’t want to commit to the ED1 and ED2 they seem to try to steer you to. Keep the faith:)

@momzilla2D just received an email stating an update to his application. That’s all. Was not expecting to hear until March…

@Bayeriffic Did your son apply for the DHS or Paul Tulane scholarship? Maybe that could be where some of the deferred are now being accepted.

@my2001twins he didn’t apply for any scholarships or honors

@bayeriffic Our D applied to Paul Tulane but hasn’t heard. Didn’t want to apply ED1 or 2 either since very interested but not 100% sure until knowing about $. I heard of one boy at Homestead in Cupertino who got in this week but nobody else in this area. We are nearby Cupertino but not same school.
