I was deferred from Tulane around a month ago, I was curious if anyone knows when most RD comes out. Is it April 1 exactly or mid March?
Im sorry that the financial aid seems bleak but don’t make the mistake of sending your child to a school that will either break you financially or the student. One thing I have learned through this process is that there are soooo many great schools out there. Schools where our kids can thrive and move on into the world with a great education and minimal debt. I had debt when I graduated and I cant tell you how stressful that was.
@happytimesforever Being realistic on what you can pay is key to this whole thing. Neither my husband nor I were able to finish college due to this very thing. My husband is 50 years old and we are still paying off his massive student loans to this day and he has NO degree. We will not allow our kids to be in this situation.
We have three kids (current ages 17, 14, and 13), so that EFC will be the same when we have two in at the same time. I realize that going to a school like Tulane is a real privilege and it’s not something that everybody will be able to do. Our first has a lot of potential, and would be a great fit at Tulane, but I think there are many families like us - we’re in that strange situation where we are just over the income range where you’d get aid, but not one of the families where the income has been at that level for a long period of time and they have saved a lot, or just very well off and Tulane’s tuition is a drop in the bucket. I don’t begrudge the people who get a lot of aid, because that means that they are struggling. We are not struggling, we have enough money to not worry about the next mortgage payment or electric bill, but we don’t have much left over after putting money into our retirement savings. We have money available to give each kid money for college, but we’re about $100K short (assuming 78K TCA because our transportations costs will be a bit higher and allowing for tuition increase) for a Tulane education at this point. We won’t let our son take out more than the $27K federal loan, and we can’t take on Plus loans knowing that there are two more kids behind this one. Income is variable, so we can’t count on more than the budget. Being realistic on what you can pay is key to this whole thing.
It will be heartbreaking for my son if Tulane doesn’t happen, but he will do fine.
@ecart17 some decisions appear to be rolling now. Just curious, do you see a Fund and Term column in your gibson portal next to your status pending? Some people have this and are wondering if it means anything as some have been accepted after noticing the change
@elodyCOH I think that is an awesome approach! Tulane is a great school, but not worth it if your debt when you graduate is so high that you can’t buy a house, start a family, etc.
Hoping you guys get good news on the scholarship!
Is it bad that I never received a Gibson Portal account? I was deferred back in December, and I got my notification on the Tulane Undergraduate Applicant Portal. I see everyone discussing their Gibson Portals, but I don’t have one.
@CRiverMac I thought the same thing. But people only gave a Gibson if they applied for financial aid. Did you?
@3mamagirls No I did not, my parents told me that our household income won’t qualify for FA for individual schools. I did apply through FAFSA though.
@crivermac If you applied through FAFSA then (I am assuming to get the $5500 student loan?) then you should have a portal. But my understanding is that it has nothing to do with being deferred. Maybe someone else can chime in.
@CRiverMac Take a look at the right side of your Green Wave portal and see if you have login information for Gibson Online. If so, follow the directions. If not, check to see if you sent the FAFSA to Tulane.
Does anyone know when Paul Tulane decision notifications will come out? I heard that some people have already gotten notifications about the deans honors scholarship
@collegechick000 The email sent confirming receipt of the Paul Tulane application indicated recipients are typically notified late February.
@collegechick000 Many people have already gotten notifications they didn’t receive Paul Tulane, and one person on reddit has said they received it. So notifications have already started to come out for the PTA.
@obfromjersey Thanks for the insights. My D is is also “high stats” and a science major. When your Gibson updated adding the “fund” and “term” columns were the boxes blank or anything in them? Ours appeared but are empty (does that make sense?). To the right it says “admission decision pending review” and the status is “established and requested”. Is this what you saw too? Thanks so much!
My daughter has been notified that she did not receive PTA but nothing about DHS. Some people I have read heard on DHS but not PTA. Her admission counselor said decision will be coming out through next week
@lrdl1234 Thanks for the insights! Has your D been admitted? My D was deferred EA, waiting on admission decision and PTA. Thx!
Yes she was admitted EA back in December
@collegemom111111 Yes, the new “fund” and “term” boxes on Gibson were initially blank and then later changed later after she received the acceptance. I hope that is a good sign for your daughter.
If you get the Paul Tulane Award, does it show up in Gibson?
Wait you already got notified that you got the Paul Tulane Award? @Goose15
