Tulane EA and ED Admission Decisions - Class of 2021

Fingers crossed, pls let us all know…

This is a bit of a specific question. I’m a senior, I applied EA for Tulane on October 28th, and I feel like I have a good shot of getting in. I was a Senate Page in 2015, and a lot of my page friends who got into Ivys (and UVA, UNC) got rejected from Tulane. Does Tulane not consider it to be a good extra curricular? I guess I’m just really overthinking this- the page program changed my life and I wrote my essay on it. Tulane is my top choice but it doesn’t seem like anyone I know has gotten in who was a Page (and very qualified). Does anyone on this forum know someone who got into Tulane and was a senate page?

@choirlover01 -I don’t know about the Senate Page program but you said that many of these kids went to the Ivies. Tulane will often defer a student with the highest grades, believing that they are using Tulane as a safety school. Tulane wants students who want Tulane, that is why they look for students who show interest. I think that the edition of ED allows students to prove that they truly put Tulane as #1. I would imagine that students with the highest grades who apply ED will get in while if they apply EA they may be more likely to be deferred to the RD round.

@ecgaltodfw - receiving scholarship from Tulane does not automatically mean you are in the Honors program. Tulane automatically admits the top 10% of the incoming freshman class into the honors program. If you are not initially ‘accepted’ into the program, you can still be part of the Honors program once you are a current student at Tulane! If you are interested in becoming part of the Honors Program, but were not initially accepted to the Honors Program, your S/D will meet with the Honors Department and determine if this would be a good fit for them. This is meant to be a flexible program that allows students to have the chance to become part of the program, even as a current student.

Scholarships and the Honors Program are completely separate. Although many students who are admitted into the Honors Program receive scholarship (due to their high academic achievements), there is not a direct correlation.

@choirlover01 - As DebmomNY said, a lot of the super high achieving students use Tulane as a safety. Tulane can guess this if the student applies (free application) and then shows zero additional interest. The biggest giveaway is when top students do not even bother to write the “optional” Why Tulane essay. I’m sure that the Senate Page program has nothing to do with it. In fact, it sounds pretty impressive to me. So, how can you stand out to Tulane as a serious applicant? - Make sure that you have written a strong Why Tulane. If you do not think that your essay conveys your real interest in Tulane, send your admissions counselor an email and let him/her know of your serious interest in Tulane. Have you visited TU or gone to a regional event? Tulane will know this and count this towards your interest. And finally, you can just send your admissions counselor a short email. Ask a question about a program or department that you are interested in. Good luck everyone…it’s an exciting time!

On the topic of showing interest, Tulane is my number one school, however I live in PA and do not have the money to go to any visits, and I couldn’t go to the Tulane Reception near my town. Will this hurt me? I wrote a “Why Tulane” that is pretty good in my opinion, but is that enough? What can I do to convey my interest even more?

@allison1225 - NOLA is not always the easiest/most affordable city to get to, and your AO understands this. Showing interest helps, but your decision will not be negatively effected by you not coming to a tour (if you express the reason why you can’t attend).

Showing interest matters at any school you apply, but visiting a tour is just one of the many ways one can show interest. Having a GENUINE conversation with your admission counselor can matter. Attach a personality to the application. Don’t just be a number, stand out! Feel free to ask your admission counselor if they know of any ways to ‘experience’ Tulane without actually coming for a tour. Once again, make sure it is a genuine conversation.

any idea when the next wave of acceptances will go out? any idea when notices of deferrals will go out as well?

@mom3boyz - most acceptances are going out every Monday at 7pm CT.

@mom3boyz At this point, Tulane seems to be only accepting, so I’d expect deferrals and flat-out rejections to come towards the later end of the deadline, if not the last day, just so they can get a feel of who is applying.

what day did you submit your application/ when were all the materials received?

@allison1225 You are correct, those who hear early are acceptances. They wait until December, closer to the deadline for deferrals to the RD round. Often many of those who have waited for months receive their acceptances in December too, once they see how the class is coming together. This year, in particular, I would expect them to wait on more due to the addition on the ED round.

@TulaneBarry if applications are not reviewed in the order they are received, do you know how they are reviewed?

@stressedsenior99, as stated in my previous post, I am unaware of the logistics behind how applications are read. As a TU student, I am not familiar with how the review process timeline works. I definitely recommend asking an admission counselor. I wish I could be of more assistance on this specific topic. Once again, seems kinda random to me, but that is just my personal opinion.

Well if the pattern of the last couple weeks hold, more acceptances were mailed out tonight/tomorrow.

I emailed my admissions counselor a quick questions and have yet to receive a response but @TulaneBarry, you may know the answer to this: can I apply to both DHS and PT, or just one?

@allison1225 you definitely can! Feel free to apply to both the DHS and Paul Tulane Award. These will be available through your Application Status Portal.

@allison1225 you can apply to both.

I was accepted last Monday! I’m very excited!
