Tulane EA and ED Admission Decisions - Class of 2021

@ChelseaNicole do you mean you’re a teen mom or your mother was a teen mom? Either way, congrats! Based on what you have up there, you really have overcome a lot. I can’t imagine doing that well while working 2 jobs! Definitely awesome:)

@ZBlue17 my mother got pregnant at 14, had me at 15 and while she was pregnant moved to the US on her own. My college essay is about that

@ChelseaNicole that sounds like it would be a very unique and emotional topic

@lourveamerican we did not apply ED at Tulane or any of the other schools.

I applied EA but only a few days before the deadline because I only recently became interested in Tulane, I did visit and have shown my interest but my SAT scores are bad but my GPA is pretty good and I take a hard course load, Should i count on not getting in.

@catmo24 The admitted page does not mean you are admitted, it is a general link.

For anyone who’s worried about being deffered for high stats, I’m just one example but I was accepted on Thanksgiving with a 35 ACT, 1540 SAT, 108/100 WGPA and tons of extracurriculars, leadership and service. My Why Tulane essay was very short, only about 100 words, and pretty generic, since I live too far away to visit and didn’t have any personal experiences to relate. Hope that eases your minds!

@apocalypsedreams Just going off @TulaneJeff 's blog. Doesn’t mean it’s necessary but it is a way to show demonstrated interest and I would expect even an essay built from online research is better than skipping it.

@panic2017 Were you early decision and what state? My son has a 36, but his gpa is no where near that. 105.68 I have never seen anyone get in with that ACT at least the posting in the past years. They do defer a lot of high stats every year. I looked through last years thread. I guess maybe not everyone goes on this site and my son points out not many people get that score. I can see my son’s GPA was not as strong as your. Does that include gym and art as examples? My son’s school has those classes and they can bring down GPA some. My son took 10 AP class and will have taken 9 AP classes by the end of the year. No one really took AP classes freshman year and he only took one sophomore year. They didn’t seem to push it at his school as much until Junior year and senior year.

@fun1234 I think earlier today you may have mentioned your son could have taken one more AP. I doubt that is why he is delayed on a decision. My son took 2 sophomore, 3 junior, and 2 senior year and got in. Trust me there are a ton of AP offerings at our high school. It could go back to though that with so many APs, he may be considering another school ED. You have time. Good luck.

@fun1234 and those worried about being deferred because of high stats, my son applied EA in mid October and was accepted on October 31. He has a 36 ACT. I too was worried, but I believe his true interest in Tulane was apparent in his WhyTulane essay. He was offered 32K and Honors. Hoping that everyone anxiously waiting hears good news soon!

I applied EA on October 30 and still have not heard back. After looking at the posts of several people who applied a week or so after me who heard over Thanksgiving, I am getting worried. I have good stats, in my opinion: 36 ACT, 4.0 UW, 4.4 W (my school’s scale is strange), my school does not rank but by guess I would say top 10 or 5%, good EC- NHS Vice President, 4 year varsity athlete (captain senior year), 2 sport athlete Kairos retreat leader (for those of you who don’t know, Kairos leaders lead a small group over 4 days and give a talk), part of 6 student team that works with faculty to spread theological mission of school, and many other clubs and organizations, probably excellent recs, decent essay.
Not to sound conceded, but is this Tufts Syndrome? I did the Why Tulane… a little bit generic but I really thought hard about it even though I couldn’t visit because of distance/time/cost. I really have a genuine interest in Tulane and would like to hear good news soon! Tulane is one of my top schools and I am getting very anxious lol.

@fun1234 I am EA and from NJ. I did not apply ED anywhere.Yes that includes gym and art stuff, but those bring my GPA down as well because of the weighting system. At my school you’re not allowed to take AP classes until Junior and Senior Year. I took the maximum amount my schedule would allow - 5 Junior Year and 6 Senior Year.

Did we ever get confirmation on which of these statements is correct? Earlier on this thread, there was the belief that decisions would be released intermittently at 7pm CT up until the 20th, but there was also a belief that the decisions would go out on almost a bulk release on one date between now and the 20th. Just curious!

Having studied this EA situation pretty intensely. It appears that Tulane is hesitant to accept EA candidates with high scores who also submitted subject test test scores. Their premise appears to be that since they do not require or encourage subject test scores, many of these candidates applying EA who submit these are likely using Tulane as a back up and have probably applied to Ivy league schools or similar schools via ED (which may be true!). As a result, they are deferring some of these people into the regular pool.

@cereal3 You make a valid point for consideration on subject test scores but you mentioned Tulane worried that applicants applied ED to Ivy or similar. ED (or SCEA) requires that a student not apply EA/SCEA/ED to any other schools. Applying RD is a concern, but not ED.

if appy ED to other schools you can certainly apply EA to Tulane or as many schools as you like
ED does not preclude one from applying EA to other schools

@Sportsman88, there are selective schools that do permit early applications to other schools, but they all vary. For example, Stanford permits it if there is an early deadline to apply for scholarships, as there is at Tulane. Notre Dame only restricts students from applying ED elsewhere. I do think there may be merit to the subject score issue. My D applied a few years ago with a 35 ACT and high GPA and high SAT subject test scores. She was deferred EA and pulled her app because she lost interest after the deferral.

For the record, my D submitted both SAT scores and 3 subject test scores and she got into Tulane 10/31. Her Why Tulane essay definitely showed interest and probably made a difference. It was also sincere. She got the 32K and Honor’s invitation. She’s applying to 1 Ivy (RD), and a few other non-Ivy reaches (also RD). We can’t wait to visit Tulane!

@panic2017 The the number one at evan’s school only had a 107, but It is probably because he took less AP classes because of band 11 is a really high number. I know my son is currently taking 5 along with anatomy and physiology and it is very hard to keep really high grades, He has some 93’s. They are still are considered A’s, but they are on the lower side. My son did take social studies as college prep because it wasn’t his strong area so It did lower his GPA some from that. If he had to do it over he would of taken honors last year since 4 AP’s were not too bad. His guidance counselor encouraged him. I know the amount he took was more than most and the ones that took more are getting a C and some B’s. It sounds like you are super smart. My son did apply to other colleges since most schools are not a guarantee. He would liked to have listed Tulane as his first choice for National Merit Scholarship, but he wanted to wait and see if he got in first.
