U of R Class of 2022 Applicants Discussion

I got accepted around two weeks ago but haven’t received anything about merit scholarships. Does anyone know when we will get these?

international student waitlisted. Anyone who got waitlisted, did you all receive the spring 2019 enrollment stuff and how does that work out. I mean are you already offered admission for spring 2019 or your just considered for application for the spring term?

In the same boat as you, @sparkykoolkat. Thought we would have heard by now.

people accepted on March 21st started receiving their Financial aid packages. I haven’t received mine yet, but I guess it will come within a week since they started releasing them.

@sparkykoolkat I received a merit scholarship within a week of acceptance. Did you hear anything back from them by now?

I still haven’t gotten anything back @mutewine

Anybody who got accepted , did they hear back on NMF scholarship award? By what date can we expect that. Will the college be informed about our first choice before we SIR, or do we need to SIR without this information.

@physicsfuture Can you explain to me about the Research and Innovation Grant? Is it like a scholarship to help in fee or opportunity to research? How can we apply, or is it too late?

@Daorys99 there is no application for the grant, it is given out to those who apply as freshman and indicated interest in being considered on their application. It is not a scholarship per-say, it is money to help support you during research.

anyone know if they’re starting to pull from the waitlist yet?

@collegebound73 typically that would be after decisions are do back so they know what the yield actually was. Just did our accepted students day and they said because last years class was higher yield than expected they accepted less this year nd plan to have a smaller class. Hopefully it’s works out that less accepted means you get a chance on the waitlist.

folks planning on going to UofR from Massachusetts - any recommendation for choosing between UofR and Umass Amherst for Biology - which is better for a pre-med track? Decision time pressure…what have you considered? please share…

@soledad2022 I just visited URochester today for the 2022 Experience. It was fantastic. I am also prospective pre-med and URochester is very highly rated. They have excellent advising and professional opportunities for pre-med students (shadowing, patient care, volunteering, etc.) since they have a medical school and hospital down the road.

@Daorys99: RIG is essentially an enticement to enroll. It doesn’t provide any additional opportunity for research per se; those opportunities abound at UR regardless. As @physicsfuture points out, it’s money to help support research that the student may engage in. Students may buy equipment, travel or attend conferences, and even pay themselves to do research ($10/hr, I believe).

A few notes about students using RIG to pay themselves. First, it will generate income to the student, so the student will need to file taxes in NY state if they don’t already live there. Second, I believe only unpaid research shows up as “INTERNSHIP” on the student’s transcript; RIG funded research does not. At least that’s the way it is with my son. YMMV.

@SuperGymnast_04 - Thanks for the note. Where are you from?

@soledad2022 I am from a suburb very near University of Rochester. Financial aid will go down if I chose to commute, however, so I may very well chose to stay on campus anyway.

My daughter’s no. 1 choice. Unfortunately I don’t think we can swing the financials. She got offered very small merit and school aid that barely covers 1/4 of the full sticker price. She got a “much” nicer package from Union but really loves UR. Fortunately she seems to comprehend the risks in taking six figure loans to pay for undergrad.

Can’t hurt to ask, let financial aid know what your other offer is and see if they can do better.

@skateguy50 - do you think asking financial aid about merit money will change anything…my S has a good merit from RPI…but nothing from UofR

@soledad2022 we asked URochester to match my merit aid from Case Western Reserve and they declined. I haven’t had a single successful aid appeal anywhere. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to try.
