After initially rejecting it, University of Rochester accepted my financial aid appeal and gave me a larger scholarship! I receive $2000 more per year now.
Congratulations @SuperGymnast_04
Anyone know what the acceptance rate was this year?
Did anyone that was accepted on 3/21 get their merit/financial aid yet?? It’s already been 3 weeks and most people get theirs within a week.
Acceptance rate should be a 25%. One out of every 4 applicants were given admission.
I have been researching about this school and I am wondering if people have read about the following news. I don’t know if the EEOC case is still running . What are other parents thinking after seeing this news ?
The thing is, that many don’t want to shine light on the Ivy League universities that have the same thing going on. They are just able to suppress the news from getting out. I’ve heard stories from Cornell, Columbia etc… even other schools not Ivy but in the top 30 as well. Everyone wants to isolate the UofR as if this same exact thing isn’t currently happening at other universities. It’s happening all over; it just seems that the UofR has the spotlight on this one.
@phemrajani FWIW, the article is from last Nov, but overall… as my son put it (he was IN the dept in question and knew many of the “players” involved), “This is like a messy divorce. Mostly one side is being heard and there are definitely two sides. One side is just much louder than the rest and getting oodles of people to believe them and protest just seeing that one side.” (I paraphrased his words.)
For me (not knowing any of the players), I totally trust his judgment and inside information. He’s glad the profs who have left did so because, as with any divorce, “there’s no way they could all work together anymore, and what they are saying is not totally what happened,” (which is not the same thing as saying nothing happened that shouldn’t have). Those staying behind are still awesome at their work and are in no way whatsoever responsible for what happened so shouldn’t be punished for it. (Would you like being punished for something a co-worker did that you had no part in? If not, don’t do it to others.)
These sorts of things can (and have) happened in multiple places - some just get more press than others. 'Tis best to teach our students all about them so they know when to speak up and to speak up. It’s impossible to send them anywhere “safe” because one never knows when or where something will happen.
There’s no way in the world I plan to hold UR (or profs who stayed) in a negative light about it. I just don’t see the need for any sort of witch hunt.
@Creekland- agree with you. Is your son in cognitive science, my son has applied to the same major and would like to hear more about it.
whats the social scene at UofR like?
@phemrajani My lad graduated last year with majors of BCS & Bio and minors in ASL and Psych. He’s across the street in his first year of med school at URoc now. He still very willingly answers questions via emails with others interested in UR, so if you’d like his address to ask him things in person, feel free to send me a pm.
Kindly note that he is in med school (continuing to score very well on exams - aka - studying often), so might not be able to answer emails immediately, but definitely answers them when he has a free minute or two.
Hey guys,
I was accepted on March 28! I didn’t post or anything because I wrapped up in other college decisions that released the same day (NYU, Cornell). I think I’m committing to Rochester. They gave me a deans scholarship and the KRfrench scholarship. I’m here to talk to anyone who is also going, join any groups, and so on.
Oh and why do you guys want to attend U of Rochester? Outside of awesome aid I recieved, the high rankings, seemingly amazing academics from reviews I’ve read, and the course offerings, I don’t really have personalized reasons to go to Rochester. I’m turning down NYU for this because the aid at NYU was horrible and I was given like this guaranteed transfer at Cornell, that I’m still not sure I’m pursuing, and I need to understand where I’m attending in the fall and reasons to love rochester.
I thought the University of Rochester could only award one scholarship per student? I received the Rochester promise, but also was award at my school for the Susan b Anthony. I called the UofR and they said they can only give out one and they gave me the higher amount.
@motivator2218 I don’t know about that because I received two emails, one was the deans scholarship which I think is from the college but the second one KRfrench is an endowed scholarship so it comes from someone else’s donation. Moreover, My fin aid package was updated after receiving the KRFRENCH, it increased like $6000 in grants and scholarships but my loan options were taken away and my work study was decreased.
@HERCULES_HERCULES University of Rochester is a fantastic school and Rochester is a great city (I’ve lived 10 minutes away for my whole life). Have you visited? I am strongly considering attending the University of Rochester (even though it is more expensive for us than my dream school, Cornell) because of its smallish-size, gorgeous compact campus, and closeness to home.
Has anybody heard about any wait-list notification yet?
@SuperGymnast_04 I remember you from the Cornell thread. Hey! I haven’t visited, I think I might but I’m pretty sure I’m going. If I end up not liking it, I’ll use my transfer option next year.
My son is visiting the college this Friday for RIG event. They have to spend a day in flight Thursday . On Saturday they are planning to visit Niagra(though it is frozen) and flyback on Sunday morning from Buffalo.
@Creekland thank your much for offering to connect with your son, I have sent you a pm.
