U.S. News 2006 Ranking Prediction

listen, w. the methodology that US News uses, schools that have MAD money (i.e. large endowments) will always be ranked high. Like, how does Vanderbilt deserve to be ranked in the top 20 over Mich, Tufts, Berk. Notre Dame, i know it has a good alumni network, but does it deserve to be top 20. NO. Absolutely No.

Vanderbilt should definitely NOT be tied with Rice

Was it, Mr. Bball87? I remember a thread that was dedicated to the USnews of old and I do not recall Cornell being that high. But...I'll take your word for it. Speaking of rankings...collegekid1988, you obviously seem to care about the rankings. Your passion in this discussion and the fact that you started this thread seems to suggest that. By your posts, I even take it that prestige is one of the most viable influences to you when determining a school. So I ask you....why did you choose Cornell? Moreover, why do you incessantly demote Dartmouth and Caltech if prestige to you explicitly lies in USnews?

"I 100 percent agree. Dartmouth, academically is not as good as some of the schools that are considered 'top 10.'"

As an aside, a number of people irritated by your banter have led me to believe that you ARE bball87. Both of you want to transfer to Penn, and both of you got into Cornell, Uchic, Duke, Northwestern, and Rice. You both turned down these EXACT schools for Cornell. Both of you meticulously love to bag on Duke and Dartmouth too.

"...you can say the same thing about Duke. Almost every student from my school that had above a 1500 and 94 average got accepted to Duke. However, only two, none of the others got accepted to H, Y, S, MIT and I am referring to over 15 kids."

Both of you even started threads about whether or not people recruited at Cornell. Both of you are sooooo insecure about going to Cornell.

From bball: "I was accepted to a bunch of places, JHU, NW, Chicago, Duke, so basically, I should have gone to Duke according to the standards on this board. I also got into Rice, but that school doesn't get respect on this board either."

From you: "Everytime i read posts by Slipper and other ppl, they make it seem like I turned down a school (Duke) that is superior in almost every aspect, minus engineering. I would just like to know if anyone else ever thinks about their decision and if they have any doubts.

Last thing, did ANYONE turn down other ivy leagues for Cornell, b/c juding from other posts, this doesn't seem to be the case...."

Both of you even use the same puerile diction. Now, the most humorous part of all of this is that you claim to not KNOW him. However, in a number of posts, you (collegekid) have responded to bball's threads. Don't you think that's kind of funny, kiddo? :) If you are not, bball, I sincerely apologize. But you must admit, these are too many coincidences.

I must say the evidence is compelling.

I did point out to DMC earlier that bball87 and collegekid1988 seemed to share an unusual amount of similiraties. Honestly, I can't see how they are NOT the same person. I honestly could have cared less, but its amusing that you claim to not know him.

::Just if people weren't so close-minded about Texas!!!::

1) Texas kills people.

2) Texans have bad hair, bad clothes and bad cars.

3) Texas is hot and polluted (especially Houston, yikes).

Enough said?

Ok firstly, Vanderbilt? Is that even a prestigious university. I know many kids in my high school who had mediocre grades & scores, who weren't in the top 20 get into it.

Frankly, Vanderbilt does not deserve to be in the top 25. It's not even that well-known in the West btw. And yes Westerners do know about the Ivies.

Ok, what's the big deal with Duke? I mean honestly, who cares if this kid rejected Duke or not. Frankly if I had applied to Duke and gotten accepted, I wouldn't have chosen it. And yes, part of that reason is because of the location and it just doesn't seem to have the type of atmosphere that I would want.

"Ok firstly, Vanderbilt? Is that even a prestigious university."
Is that question? There is no question mark, so I am confused. If it is, then the answer is yes. It is not as good as Rice IMO but it is very good school with lots of cool people.

"I know many kids in my high school who had mediocre grades & scores, who weren't in the top 20 get into it."
Yeah, stuff like that happens once in a while.

Frankly, Vanderbilt does not deserve to be in the top 25. It's not even that well-known in the West btw. And yes Westerners do know about the Ivies."

Wow.

Moreover, rejecting Duke because of location is predominantly the reason people opt not to go there.

Tis true Devil; Tis true.

At the price of generalizing, I believe more Westerners think of Rice as prestigious rather than Vanderbilt. (Oh, and yes this is a sentence, not a question. :))

Haha ok. I'm kind of tired, so I was not sure. IMO Rice is top 10. It is just as good as a Dartmouth or a Duke to me.

Vanderbilt does not belong in the Top 25. What programs is the school known for? Exactly.

What programs is Dartmouth known for? Yet it truly deserves to be top 10. Well, maybe you have a point. IMO Dartmouth is an LAC, so it should not even be ranked here. It should be number one on the LAC rankings. So yeah, you have a point.

ok ok ok guys... well we have too many nerdy schools - mit, caltech, uchicago in the top 25. Vanderbilt's insanely hot women and party atmosphere is the positive charge needed to cancel out the negative charges of the other schools.

but seriously, Vanderbilt has a great med school, law school, and well overall it has really strong undergrad academics. Deserves to be on par with Rice. I mean what kind of name is that.."Rice" When I heard of it, all I thought was, yeah, it has a good baseball team, but other than that I thought it was like a safety school like Clemson. I mean, I eat rice--I dont eat vanderbilt-- thus point proven, case closed.

Just my 2 cents.

-please try to make sense out of this.

By the way, just curious..how does a Christian school like Notre Dame get a lot of props to be ranked in top 25...? Other than sports, what are ND's academic strengths?

Here's the BEST prediction based on actual data:

Princeton

Harvard

MIT

Stanford

Yale

CIT

Columbia

Cornell

Dartmouth

U Penn

Brown

Northwestern

University of Chicago

JHU

Duke

Wash. U.

Vanderbilt

Rice

Emory
19 UND

UC Berkeley

U Virginia

Michigan

CMU

UCLA

North Carolina

Georgetown

Reasons:
Most of the fundamentals did not change much, other than applications and acceptance rates. Just focusing on the Ivy League, according to this article in the Cornell Daily Sun:

http://www.cornellsun.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/04/08/425613b692460?in_archive=1

"Cornell experienced a whopping 17.4-percent increase in application volume this year...Yale University experienced a 1.2 percent decrease in applications, while both Brown and Dartmouth experienced a 10 percent increase in applications. Columbia University's applications increased 5 percent while the University of Pennsylvania had 3 percent more applications."

So I expect Cornell, Brown, and Dartmouth to jump, and the others to remain about where they are now.

Rice is definitely not a safety school for anyone.

HAHAAH DUKE SUCKS so bad that it is 15....great prediction really, more like 4 or 5..

U Penn isn't going to drop 6 spots.

Duke is definitely not top 10.

"Vandy kids are smart enough to slack off all the time, and party like there is no tommorrow" -- Playboy

Vandy is the only top 20 school with real parties. Rice, Chicago, Emory, etc. these are all lame. Even schools that people think are cool (Duke, Dartmouth) can't compare, especially in terms of hot girls.

I love visiting Vanderbilt (its my first choice) and I think it is heaven on Earth, so honestly stop bashing it.

Hot girls and real parties definitely define good universities....
