Lets see, if 10 people give 30 dollars each, thats 300 dollars. If 2 people give 200 dollars each, thats 400 dollars. In the first scenario, the alumni rate is increased. In the second scenario, total alumni giving is increased. An increase in one doesn't neccesarily have a strong correlation with the other.

Exactly. There was nothing in the article Collegebounded linked to attributing the 3.4% increase in overall fundraising to an increased alumni giving rate. In fact...
The increase reflects an effort by schools to broaden contributions beyond alumni to individuals who didn't attend, Santa Monica, California-based Rand found in a survey of 971 schools.

wow....i didn't think there were 18 years old philosophers walking around on college campuses discussing the likes of Karl Marx.
1) I am not 18 years old.
2) I never talk about Marx. Anyone with even a smattering of philosophy would understand that Marx hardly falls in the analytic tradition.

Oh and nspeds, I am thoroughly elated with Hobbes so far. Next year, my Phil class requires readings of Kant, so I better check out the "Critique of Pure Reason" quite soon. The edifice of Critical Philosophy should prove quite amusing.

Moving back on topic, it is not the fact that Collegebounded purported his own list that irks me. It is the fact that he claimed his ranking to be the most accurate. And as my comrades thoughtprocess and banana have proven, Collegebounded's method of analyzing the impact of alumni giving is off.

I love that game! I was playing it at the time, so i just put it as my moniker without thinking. What would you have preferred? How about....UVATOP10! or Uvabob or UvaoverHarvard or UVAICan'tGetPastMyInferiorityComplex? Would any of those have worked? Plus, I didn't feel like choosing a name on CC would require profound thought.

uvajoe: Since when were CC names supposed to be taken seriously or used as a judge of character? If you ask me, taking the time to attack someone's CC name is beyond lame. Now that crap seriously is not cool.

You said something about UC Berkeley not being a "legit" top school. Uh, in many different INTERNATIONAL rankings, it has ranked number 2, after Harvard.

This includes both the British THES and the Chinese ranks. Berkeley's departments are all top 5. Honestly, I think it surpasses Vanderbilt. (What ranks do your departments hold? Honestly...) Internationally the name is much more prestigious as well.

So you think that USNews determines everything? What about the other rankings made by other institutions? Suffice it to say, Berkeley is much stronger academically than Vanderbilt.

This is not simply bias, but truth. When has Vanderbilt even ranked in the top 5 (or should I say top 2) in ANY polls/rankings?

We still get the same professors teaching grad and undergraduate students. The reason why Berkeley isn't now in the top ten (it was some years back, I think about ten or so) is because of our student to teacher ratio, our funding, etc.

Frankly though, Berkeley's undergraduate still surpasses Vanderbilt's. We still have top-notch professors and curriculum.

I mean the name speaks for itself. Internationally Berkeley is more renowned, and Americans even ask what "Vanderbilt" is.

And you still haven't told me what ranks Vanderbilt's departments hold.

Hmm...considering this is a COLLEGE forum my name is somewhat appropriate my college+my first name, right??? Also, in an anonymous forum the only indication of character(besides posts) is your user name. Who is really illogical here?
