"And when I state that Cal, Chicago, Cornell etc... are as good as CalTech, Columbia, Dartmouth etc..., I was not stating an opinion. I was stating the combined opinion of the country's leading academics, educators, intellects and industrialists."

Do you? Hmmmm.....

"The difference between you and I is that you make up your own rankings. I do not profess to have such insight I merely state what the experts say."

No it's not. I merely confirmed what Slipper, a person with infinitely more knowledge about schools than I/one "in the know" suggested. Does he not have the recommendation of people "in the know," or are you the sole beneficiary? I must admit, where I am from (regional bias-yes), Umich is a safety school to ivy league/Duke/Stanford/Rice/JHU applicants. My opinions are a bit skewed because of my limited perspective, but I am giving my opinion (like you).

The University of Michigan is indeed a safety school to top students. But it also happens to be on par with the majority of the Ivy League academically and reputationally speaking. That is not my opinion..it is backed by academe and industry. Just look at the peer assessment score and the companies that hire students on campus. Why don't you call up Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan or GE or Microsoft and ask them where Michigan ranks on their list of universities?

As for Slipper, he certainly knows his stuff...but no more than I, and I do not believe either one of us is capable of truly rating universities.

Well said.

yeah!!! this thread has been resolved.. game over. problem solved...next up...WORLD RANKINGS! any takers?

Devil, what ru trying to say, again, getting your foot stuck in your mouth. We aren't talking about selectivity, but about prestige and academic excellence. If we are talking about selectivity, Rice is up there with Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke. However, is Rice academically up there with those three schools. The answer is NO. How many top 10 departments does Rice have? How many nobel prize winners are on staff there? Comparing Rice to Chicago is not exactly unheard of, but it isn't excatly correct either.

"How many top 10 departments does Rice have?"
Are you asking me this because you don't know or because you are trying to prove a point? How many top 10 departments does a top 10 school like Dartmouth have?

My point exactly.

"Comparing Rice to Chicago is not exactly unheard of, but it isn't excatly correct either."

Is this in respect to Calli people or the rest of society?

Edit: As a Texan, I DO believe Rice is up there with the Cornells and Dartmouths and Dukes of the country. The school is practically an LAC (5:1 ratio) and I love the teachers. They are just willing to literally bend over backwards for their students.

I didnt notice it hiding in the A section on Ivy Grad's list when I altered it.

??? slipper, you must be referring to the poster (i believe it was collegeparent?) who posted a list right after my post about Tiering...i have yet to post my own list.

devil, idk what goes on. I think Rice is every bit as good as Dartmouth. The problem is that Rice's student body is "bought" in a respect. A lot of the students there are on scholarships and many wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the big time scholarships they were on. I got into Rice, I think it is a phenomenal school. However, if you look at the admit site on the Rice board, you will see a ton of CC kids that got as much as half to full rides at Rice. This is the same with WUSTL, but Rice has been doing this for some time. My idea of a toppppp school is a school with a good student body, great academic programs, top faculty, and etc. Therefore, a school like Dartmouth in my book isn't as academically sound as a school like Columbia. THIS IS MY OPINION, and this isn't to say that a person will do better or suceed at Columbia or Dartmouth. Obviously, both are respected by grad schools tremendously.

"A lot of the students there are on scholarships and many wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the big time scholarships they were on."
Where did you ascertain this information? I visit Rice practically every other week to see friends and I think nspeds can back me up when I say that those kids LOVE every minute of being there. Go to orientation. You will have more fun there then you have had the entirety of your young life (i.e. playing hide and seek in the libraries, wild goose chases all over the city, and just some really fabulous people). Rice kids turn down ivies (including your precious Penn) ALL the time without merit money. Why? Because the school is that fun and good.

"I got into Rice, I think it is a phenomenal school."
You don't have to prove that to me...believe me.:)

"My idea of a toppppp school is a school with a good student body, great academic programs, top faculty, and etc."
You just defined Rice.

"Therefore, a school like Dartmouth in my book isn't as academically sound as a school like Columbia."
You would be wrong. Go and visit Dartmouth. Those kids NEVER get TAs and their teachers are willing to do ANYTHING for the academic well-being of their students.

"Obviously, both are respected by grad schools tremendously."
In fact, Dartmouth is more respected than Columbia with grad placement. :) If you look at how many people go to Dartmouth, you will see that it is better than over half the ivy league in law placement. So is Duke and Stanford. I'm not sure, but isn't Rice more represented by grad schools (take its size into account) than some of the ivies as well?

Devil, u are from Houston, correct?

"Rice kids turn down ivies (including your precious Penn) ALL the time without merit money."

Not where I am from. Not one person has attended Rice in the last 5 years from my school, and I went to a reallllllly competitive school that routinely sends kids to all the ivies, mit, stanford, duke every year in high numbers.

Yeah I'm from H town. Yeah I guess it differs coast to coast.

Haha, like I said, Rice is every young Houstonian's dream school

I wonder if Ivygrad went to UVA - I actually don't know but stuff like that is typical of people on CC.

Slipper,

With all due respect, I'd like to say two things:

1) that list you keep referring to was NOT posted by me (please get your facts straight before you start making such statements)
2) i did not attend UVA. (what gives you that idea? please try and back up your accusations if you are going to start making them)

the mad props to ivy_grad!!!!!!!!! HOLLA IT UP!

honestly, devil the reason why Rice is sooo not popular outside of Texas is b/c it is located in Texas, which really scares ppl away from Rice, no offense to yourself and other natives of Texas.

Why Alexandre does almost every thread you post, you insist on bringing up U michigan and proclaiming how great it is. It's getting rather tired now don't you think? how true can your claim be if it appears your the only one seems to make it. While I like your passion, your argument is getting FAR too repetitive now. I've seen and heard it WAY too many times and it seems very few people agree with you.

^ note that's not me either.

Collegekid, you don't know anything about Houston and, if you did, you wouldn't make such blanket statements. Well, since we are in the mood of making baseless claims, I will do so as well:

Houston has hotter girls
Cornell is the worst ivy league school
I have a 23 foot vertical leap

Doesn't that bother you? :) hehe

Duke is not minority friendly!
