UC Admission Question - What's Better: 3 Yrs. of Latin, or 2 Yrs. of Latin and 2 Yrs. of Spanish?

My S is a Sophomore and is planning his Junior and Senior year schedules. He is currently taking his 2nd year of Latin, and wants to take Latin as a Junior. However, the problem is that while his HS offers a 4th year of Latin, the school will not hold the class if they do not have enough students. Based on his discussions with other classmates, there is a good chance the class will not be held.

As such, should he continue with Latin III as a Jr. and take a chance that AP Latin may not be held when he is a Sr., or should he switch as a Junior to Spanish I then Spanish II as a Senior? I understand that the UC schools want 4 years of a foreign language to be most competitive, so I don't want him lacking in this area. (If he cannot take AP Latin as a Sr. he would take AP Biology or AP Chemistry.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Three years of Latin…it’s better to be more advanced in one language than less advanced in two.

3-4 years of Latin – the foreign language requirements of schools are in place to ensure students have some proficiency in a single language rather than a smattering of vague knowledge in an array of languages.

Thanks for the responses!
