The only anthro class my CC offered aside from the prereqs (even then, archaeology was missing) was something nontransferable and silly like “Witchcraft.”

i took every anthro course at my CC.

Biological, Cultural, Archaeology, Religion Magic and Witchcraft, Linguistics and Native Americans of California.

LOVED LOVED LOVED all my classes except Linguistics cuz my prof. was such a boring dinosaur!!!

My CC had Magic/Witchcraft/Religion and it is UC transferable. I liked that class a lot, better than Cultural anthro. Other than the prereqs my school had a physical lab which I took. We also had visual anthropology (its like an ethnography class) and principles of heritage interpretation. Neither one of those classes are UC transferable so I chose not to take them.

As far as the language requirement goes, I am in both ASL 1 and Spanish 1 right now. I wish I didn’t wait until the last semester to start thinking about languages.

@janethedoe do you go to COC? Those are the exact same classes my CC has. Perhaps they all do the same stuff?

no i dont go to COC, i think the courses are pretty standard and that its all they offer at CC level. However, back in the day, my CC offered Meso-American Anthropology, i wish they still offered it :(

Yeah, I took Biological, Cultural, Archaeology, Religion Magic and Witchcraft, and Meso-America. I’m taking Native Americans of North America right now. It seems like my CC offers a few more anthro classes than the norm. They also offer Gender & Sexuality, Native Americans of California, Linguistic and Forensic but I wasn’t able to take them. I just took general Linguistics instead.

I WISH my CC offered Gender and Sexuality!! I’m jealous!!!

Do we have to take a language requirement? Or does it depend on your specific major in Anthro?

I took 2 years of french in high school, and I wasn’t required to take any more language classes.

AGR1010-
Anthro doesn’t require a language for B.A. The UC graduation requirement that IGETC fulfills should be enough.
However, shouldn’t you be interested in at least one…being that our goal in anthropology is to connect to different cultures? If you’re taking Anthro all the way to Grad school, yeah all Anthro programs i have seen require language proficiency.

Language requirement for IGETC is two semesters of the same language or two years of the same language in high school so you should be fine. BUT
You should continue when you get to the UC if you are interested in taking Anthro all the way to grad school.

i hope i don’t come off sounding harsh :)

This is awesome! Ok I need some advice. Im trying to choose out of UT Austin, UC Davis, UCSB. Ive pretty much ruled out UT. So which UC school’s anthropology department has a better reputation? UCD or UCSB?

@taylorraquel12: hey Ut austin is prob the BEST for mesoamerican anth/archaeology. I did research with them and they are excellent!
and i know ucsb has cultural anthro as a major.
i havent heard much of ucd

<3 antho peoples

my friend got denied from ucla anthro major ba. 3.01 gpa, had celiac disease told that on her application, was taking care of her sick mother who passed away recently and told that in her application.

Anyone interested in archaeology like me???

Im going to UCSC in Anthro this fall. I am also Pre-med. I hope to have an emphasis in Physical Anthropology. If Med school doesnt work out for me then im considering a doctorate in Physical Anthropology or one in Forensic Anthropology. Anthropology is an amazing field that has many aspects that have always interested me such as how we got here and what is our purpose through a cultural perspective.

@hope2bbruin : yeaah i want to focus on archaeology more specifically, near eastern/mediterranean archaeology and i kind of want to go into linguistics too… maybe pick up an ancient language or something :p

Awesome old thread.

I am an Anthropology major with a focus on Socio-Cultural but I want to get as much exposure as I can in Archaeology and Linguistics as well (Physical Anthro not so much. Haha)

I chose it because I have always been a Social Scientist. Cultural Anthropology is the king of the social sciences. You study religion, economics, language, mating and marriage, oral tradition, and you use a lot of compare and contrast methods. It is an excellent chance to use your critical thinking skills to see the world through many different eyes.

I have been accepted to UCLA, UCSD and UCSB. I am waiting to hear from Berkeley on Friday. I am pretty sure I am going to go to either UCLA or Berkeley. I have been researching both furiously. UCSD seems to have a great program as well. What schools are my fellow anthro majors choosing this year? Please tell me why as well.

I’m hoping to get into Berkeley as a cultural anthro major. I chose to major in anthro not necessarily due to my strong passion for it, but because I wanted a liberal arts education, and psychology is way too overdone. haha

@BerkeleyorBust

what were your stats

Admitted to UCR, UCI, UCSB, UCSD and UCLA for Cultural Anthro. I plan to someday become a professor (original right) and have a specific research interest in Nutritional Anthropology - how food and worldview influence each other (will be attending culinary school immediately after graduation before grad).

I’ve been admitted to UCLA, UCI, and CSUN… waiting on UCB, but I’ve made up my mind I’m going to UCLA. Actually I’ve already accepted the offer from UCLA and requested transcripts be sent.

Go Bruins!!
