UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@lindyk8 i’ve decided im just gonna take a ton of units and complete IGETC by spring. Have you ever seen a 4.0 computer science student with igetc + major preqs completed and a good essay/good ec’s get rejected?

Well no, I have not. However there’s always a first time. B-) I would say it’s unlikely - as long as all req are completed.

@csmajortom You aren’t special. Everyone who applies EECS/CS has 4.0’s + good EC’s. I know people applying who won national merit scholarships in HS.

@lindyk8 fair enough, thanks!

@EECSProdigy I don’t have to be special, just good enough.

@lindyk8 i just now realized that my question could have been interpreted like I was trying to be arrogant lol, it was just a simple question since I know you’ve been on these threads for years.

@csmajortom, I didn’t take it that way. :slight_smile:

Do you guys feel that I would be at a disadvantage if I still had 1 major prerequisite(NOT strongly recommended course) left to do in the spring? They say you have until end of spring, but they probably expect people to have completed all the major prerequisites with some strongly recommended classes in the fall. My gpa is perfect though. I’m still getting that feeling.

@EECSProdigy People have made the argument that it looks better to have everything completed in fall, but honestly I’ve never seen any solid evidence for it. If it’s true, that really sucks since a lot of the requisites are only taught in the spring of even numbered years at my CC. Either that, or my classes get canceled due to low enrollment so I have to try again the next semester. Going to a CC in the middle of nowhere is a bad time.

Well for EECS there are 10 Major prereqs + 6 strongly recommended courses. By Fall I will complete 9/10 major prereqs + 1 strongly recommended course. Next semester i plan 1 major prereq + 4 strongly recommended courses. I think you only need the major prereqs to get admission, but having more stronly recommended classes increases your chances.

@EECSProdigy Yeah, that’s how I understand it as well. Assuming none of my classes or canceled this spring I’m taking 3 major prerequisites and 3 strongly recommended courses. A lot of these are only offered in the spring at my CC, plus the high school I graduated from didn’t have any AP classes so I wasn’t able to test out of anything which made it impossible to take any of these classes last spring. Hopefully it won’t be held against me.

“You aren’t special. Everyone who applies EECS/CS has 4.0’s + good EC’s. I know people applying who won national merit scholarships in HS.”

And some even lie about ECs or disabilities to make them stand out.

@briank82 Look man I have 3 LEGIT extracurricular activities. There are 20 blank spaces. Sometimes there is that immorality inside you. Naturally some of us are tempted with doing the wrong thing. It’s kinda like wanting to cheat on your wife with another hot woman. You know its wrong, yet you can’t help yourself lol. I’m trying my best not to exaggerate my involvement in activities.

Lol…

Do you guys think that putting that I served two terms as the Vice President of the United States would give me an edge in admissions? Or is that a weak EC?

@Evilcow867 depends, who did you serve under? How many senate tiebreakers did you vote in? Did your advice to the president bring us an economic boom or a recession? Are you a “PoliSciProdigy”? Low reach for Berkeley, I’m afraid :wink:

Also, did you use your own server?

@lindyk8 You have several kids that have gone to UCB don’t you? If not, maybe someone else can answer this.

My chemistry professor has suggested that assuming I get into EECS at Berkeley I should still strongly consider going to University of Illinois due to the different atmospheres at the two universities. She says that the one student she has sent to UCB ended up dropping out after a semester, which she feels was because of the competitive atmosphere at Berkeley. How would you describe the atmosphere at Berkeley? Is it really as cutthroat as she makes it out to be?

@fncrane! long time no see, hows everything?!

@Evilcow867 without a doubt EECS is competitive, but it really depends on how well you handle that sort of environment. I would not make a blanket call like that, personally. She’s basing her analysis on one student.

@luckie1367 I’m alright, haven’t been doing too much this summer so I’m just really anxious for school to start :smiley: How are the summer sessions treating you?
