Can someone chance me please?
Major: Computer Science in L&S
GPA:3.8
All prerequisites will be done after this semester.
My disadvantage is that I am from UIUC… as an OOS.
Could someone explain to me, do I really need to complete the GE courses? And do I also need to complete the IGTEC?
Thanks in advance!!!
@yaoxiaosui1995 yo man why are you applying man? Not that you aren’t smart, UIUC is a top 5 CS program and you are in state there. You will have to pay extra for the tuition and trust me its not worth it like a private school. Also the job pay is higher because cost of living is higher compared to UIUC. I think you should stop worryin’ and turn up HARD. Party a lot if you can.
@EECSProdigy parties aren’t all that dude haha
Could anyone chance me? I’d greatly appreciate it.
Major: Political Economy
GPA: 3.93
Major GPA: 4.0
Pre-reqs: All will be done by Spring except for IAS 45 (which according to the website is only available on campus)
Extracurriculars: Heavily involved in Student Government - Student Senator; College government Vice President. Worked for an NGO based in Seoul over the summer. Good amount of volunteer work.
Disadvantages (possibly fatal):
-transferring from a 4 year OOS school.
-did not complete the IGETC/seven-course-beadth (but I will be completing a couple of upper-division classes)
@keurimja I’m not the most knowledgeable regarding OOS transfers & GE stuff, but why aren’t you completing 7-course breadth? It’s probably pretty easy to do, and would help your chances greatly.
If you completed it, you would most likely get in. Without it, I don’t know.
@goldencub Were I to go out of my way to complete the last one or two of the 7-course breadth, it would definitely delay my expected graduation date at my current institution, in the event that I stay.
I absolutely want to go to Berkeley, and if accepted, I would attend without a doubt. However, since admission to the university is far from given, I don’t think it’s a particularly wise decision to throw all my eggs in one basket.
What would you do if you were in my situation?
@lindyk8 I think AFS is a wonder organization. I had a great time in Germany when I went through them so from me it’s highly recommended. They are very organized and helped whenever I had any issues as well as when my mom had concerns. Did you have any specific questions about the programs that I could answer for you?
Hey guys! Not to be obnoxious but I posted a few pages ago asking if someone could chance me and received no response…anyone mind? Thanks
@keurimja even if you were to take summer courses?
Honestly, PoliEcon isn’t that difficult to get into. You definitely have the grades, and your EC’s are solid. Of course it’s not a given, but if you were to complete breadth, I think it would really add to your application.
Not really sure if there’s GE letter of reciprocity thing that one would get from transferring from an OOS 4-year institutions. I doubt it. I’m guessing that breadth is the way to go.
If I were in your situation - first, I would get other opinions. I’m essentially putting all of my eggs in one basket for Berkeley - I am biased. I would try to complete breadth and apply, though. You would have a good chance, provided you’ve completed all the necessary requirements.
@Grinsley I’m sure you’ll get in.
(A friend of mine got into UCB PoliSci with a 3.5, a coworker’s significant other got in with a ~3.76?)
You have stellar EC’s, you’re a first-gen college student, you have a high GPA, and you will have two AA’s. Make sure to do well on the personal statement, and be sure that you have fulfilled all requirements.
They will consider your GPA as it stands at the end of the Fall semester.
@goldencub I appreciate your help. I’m going to try calling Berkeley’s admissions office to get more insight.
Intuitively, I can’t imagine that missing one class (Arts/Literature req…) off of the 7-course breadth would have a severely negative impact on my admission chances. But seeing as though everyone on this thread seems to unanimously agree that completion of either the IGETC or 7-seven course breadth is a crucial aspect of the application, I guess I was wrong.
@keurimja Definitely hear other voices, yeah.
I think it’s mainly that they just want you to be done with GE’s by the time you transfer as a junior - it’ll allow you to complete your upper division units.
Also, be wary about having too many units. I think the max you can apply with is 80 semester units, but they only accept a maximum of 70. Try to stay within the 60-70 range if you can.
@goldencub Yeah, I’m definitely within that range.
I have another question though, when people on this thread are talking about the “7-course breadth” are they talking about the “Seven-course pattern” (http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/glossary/seven-course%20pattern.html) that’s applicable to all UC’s or are they specifically talking about the “L&S seven-course breadth requirements”.
This could just be me trying to find some false hope, but any information would be helpful.
Chance me?
Major: Computer Science (L&S because EECS is out of reach for me)
GPA: 3.84 (should be 3.87 after Fall update), 1 W in a Foreign Language course
Major GPA: not sure how to compute; but I earned a B in Calc2
Prereqs : Have Linear Algebra this Fall, will finish with Diff Eq in Spring. Will also finish the CS61B equivalent in Spring
IGETC: Completed by Winter 2016 (only missing the Foreign Language course)
EC’s: worked 40hr/wk during the first few semesters, then 20hr/wk when I started loading up on classes; also a tutor for computer programming classes.
Other notes: Older (non-traditional) student, went into full time employment after highschool, didn’t start until several years later.
Which one is easier to complete? IGTEC or the GE?
I know that UIUC is a great university for Computer Science, but Berkeley has always been my dream school. So I will give it a try. But I know that my chance of getting in is pretty slim…
Hello Friends,
I am a current student at the University of La Verne, a small private school in SoCal. I am having a difficult time deciding on classes to take because I am afraid none of my classes would transfer over. Is there anything I could do to figure out what classes I should take in order to figure this out? I just finished my first year but I have about 90 credits due to APs. However since I go to a small private school I am afraid I won’t have the units to transfer. Where can I get help? Also I am deciding on Econ but after looking at the Stats and quality of students I am honestly think about applying as a different major. Any recommendations?
@JinkoY, If you don’t mind me asking…why do you want to transfer?
The reason for me asking is that coming from a private college with a lot of units taken has some serious issues in regards to transfer admissions. It would be hard for anyone here to give recommendations without knowing the rational behind a possible transfer.
Figured everyone would benefit from watching this.
@JinkoY beware of the unit max!!
