What is the difference between a transfer G.P.A. and a normal G.P.A.? (and which do they use?)
Does the u.c. app. system automatically recognize that you’ve completed IGETC/7 breadth reqs.? I went to “declare IGETC” at my CC, but they seemed to think they only submit after you’re accepted at a UC. This seemed wrong, b/c I know igetc completion is a big part of transfer admission.
Thanks!
UC transferable GPA is calculated based on all the grades of courses that transfer to the UC. That is the GPA they use. If you took a course that is non-transferable (e.g., remedial, vocational, etc) they won't calculate the grade and don't even care about it.
You follow the IGETC path and when you apply you note in the application if you will be IGETC-certified by the following spring. The advisor is correct. You do not request the certification from the CCC until after you are accepted by the UC, and you send it in then. Basically, what the certification is is just a checklist showing you completed the General Ed courses. Otherwise the UC would make you take their GE courses.
Hey Prospective Golden Bears! I’ve been following this thread for a while, but decided to post now.
Chance me please?
Major: Cognitive Science (intending to concentrate in Computational Modeling)
Transferable GPA: 3.88
EC’s: Coding Club, Treasurer for Circle K Club, ambassador for a math tutoring app start-up, worked part-time throughout my first year
IGETC: completed
I’m not too sure how competitive Cognitive Science is as a major at Cal, but since I’m leaning towards the Computer Science side of CogSci, I’m assuming admissions will take that into account
I am currently going to a ccc and planning on transferring next fall. I have so far taken more than 40 units, 18 units first semester, 21 units second semester, and 5 units this summer (Calculus). I have a 4.0 GPA and have some but not very many extra curricular activities. One sorta extra curricular I have is that I worked with my dad in his business through out the years doing general assistant tasks in his businesses. I guess another would be that I ran a Amazon store throughout the last four years that has generated thousands dollars of revenue each year. But aside from these two things I have not had time to be active in other extra curricular activities in college such as sports because I did not have the time as I was taking a full load of classes. I am planning on applying as a econ major and want to know if i have a chance of getting in. Feedback would be nice Thanks
GPA 4.0
IGETC completed in Spring 2016
Honors Club
Honors Scholar in spring 2016 after I take the rest of the classes.
No longer applying to Berkeley. I wish they hadn’t suddenly put Calculus as a prerequisite for the Psychology major. I also blame myself for following the advice of my useless school and taking some experimental algebra class that didn’t go over the level of Algebra that’s required to be prepared for Pre-Calculus. Eff this semester
@lindyk8 Would I be able to apply to Berkeley as a Sociology major but then apply to Davis and UCLA as a psych major? You don’t have to apply to all UC’s you choose to apply to with the same major?
Another thing @boxandwhiskers, when you are accepted to Berkeley in L&S, you are accepted into the college, not the major. Once at Berkeley, you declare the major by the end of the first semester. You can choose any other L&S major to declare - different from your admitted major - assuming (1) you have completed the pre-reqs by the time you declare and (2) the major is not impacted. Now psych is impacted as far as I recall. However they may occasionally let you in. Berkeley’s fairly loosey-goosey. You just never really know.
If you really want to try and switch after transfer, once accepted ask for approval to take calc in summer before admittance or take calc first semester at Berkeley and then try to declare the psych major. They’ll either say yes or no.
@lindyk8 Thanks. I remember talking to a counselor a few semesters ago that recommended that I apply to Berkeley as a Soc major and then switch once I get in (i’ve been arguing with myself for a while now whether to switch from Psych to Soc as both majors i’m passionate about anyway) when she told me that they added Calculus requirements to Psych major for 2015/2016.
I’m also dealing with seeing if I can get academic renewal for classes I took 12 years ago at a CCC that I stopped going to after once or twice and then received an F because I didn’t realize back then I had to formally withdraw in order to not get an F. Now i’m kind of in a panic and have to run around trying to fix this stuff while trying to begin this semester. Ughhhhhdkglshg.
Re AR, definitely try to get it but they won’t put so much weight on courses from 12 years ago. In fact, some schools don’t calculate them at all if over 10 years old (not saying that’s the case with the UCs). If worse comes to worse, just explain what you said above. They definitely will give you some sort of break.
@lindyk8 That gives me some relief, hah. I thought that too, but when I enter the F into my TAP, it really drops my GPA and then I don’t qualify for the min. 3.2 GPA requirement for UC Davis’s TAG. Will they just re-calculate my GPA without the F from 12 years ago?
It was Santa Rosa Junior College. It was for Psych 1A and I went to class 2 times before I had to leave town due to an emergency and didn’t realize I had to withdraw from the class myself. I got an A in Psych 1A in 2014 after I re-started school in 2013 (not at SRJC).
No, they will calculate the GPA for admissions so that will make you ineligible for TAG. I meant more they decide how they want to interpret those grades during the evaluation process
However, if you retook Psych 1a, that would seem to constitute a repeat, meaning the F won’t figure. Meaning you should remain TAG eligible.
Put both courses into the course list in the app, then note in the additional comments that you retook the course and note the retake course name again. The app itself will not recognize the retake so will calculate both grades, but that will be corrected later.
NOTE: You don’t have to retake a course at the same educational institution. The same would apply to any other courses that are C- or lower. If there is a matching course at your current CCC, you can retake it and eliminate the bad grade (assuming AR doesn’t work). Talk to your CCC advisor.
General AR rules: To get AR, if offered, you must complete a certain number of subsequent units with a minimum GPA. Some colleges insist those subsequent courses must be at the same college (which is often a deal breaker).
SRJC allows you to apply with units from any other college, so you’re totally in the clear. Here’s the form. It says you need to attach a current transcript.
NOTE: if the AR application has not finalized when you submit TAG, put the original grades in but note in the comments that AR is forthcoming. As you have fulfilled the time frame, by the Nov application the AR should be approved, so you can put AR in application. If it isn’t, continue noting bad grades, with AR note in comments indicating when it will come into force. Do not worry about them seeing the bad grades. If they know AR is coming, they 100% will disregard.
@lindyk8 ahh thank you! Everyone I talked to about this was like “Just don’t mention the bad grades. It was so long ago, and you had a different last name.” (i’m married now) and I just thought that was a really bad idea. I feel like old grades should not even follow you around on your transcripts, but whatever. What are you gonna do.
P.s. you should be a college counselor! Much more helpful than any counselor i’ve seen in the past.
One thing I might slightly alter from what I said above. Submit AR form ASAP. Then call SRJC and ask how long the process takes. If they say two or three weeks, I’d just submit TAG near the end of sept and note AR, going with the assumption it’s accurate. It will smooth out the process a bit. If you got married you may have to submit marriage certificate. Not sure how that works.
As an Econ transfer from CCC should I be focused on finishing the IGETC or 7 course breadth requirement? From my knowledge as long as we have IGETC finished, that should satisfy Berkeley’s 7 course breadth, right?
Also, is there any preference from admissions standpoint on which we complete?
