I'm planning to apply to UC Berkeley for computer engineering/science, and I noticed that their website lists several "a-g" requirements of high school courses. (A-G courses | UC Admissions) I'm fine on all the categories except art, which I haven't really focused on throughout high school. The only classes I've taken that can be considered as visual arts are one semester of web page creation and one semester of online art history over the summer to fulfill my school's graduation requirement. I'm not sure if those would qualify for Berkeley, and if not, are there any ways to get around it? I really wouldn't want to take another art course second semester this year, but I could probably self-study for AP Art History. Is it also possible to get around it with a high SAT+subject test scores?

Talk to your GC but if what you took satisfies the school requirement (especially if you are in CA) then you should be OK. The UC’s make exceptions for kids that don’t have all the courses but usually in terms of homeschoolers and such… not for a kid who had the option but didn’t take it.

If you are in a California High school, you should be able to look up your school at this website and it’ll pop-up an exact list of classes from your school that satisfy each category.

Another option if you find you haven’t met the requirement is to take something at a local CC (again, if you are in CA you can look-up the college on that site and see what qualifies.) Take something fun… a drafting class, photography, drumming, music listening… whatever. 1 semester counts for a year.

Sorry, should’ve specified. I’m out of state, so the doorways site doesn’t work for my school. Is there any way to check whether the classes at a local community college eligible for UC? I don’t wanna take the class and then find out that Berkeley doesn’t accept it. I might also self-study for the AP Art History exam, but they admission officers won’t know about that since the test is only in May.

Two separate semesters don’t count (not sure the web design would either.) You need a year long sequence. Note from turtletime comment - mechanical drafting is an example of a course that doesn’t apply. There is no waiver for certain gpa’s.

If you want to take one at a local CC, you would want to mimic course content of an approved CCC course. AP History of Art would also satisfy it, but both these will be too late to be on your transcripts, right? I don’t know if they do conditional admissions. Maybe write them?

Thanks, I never knew that two separate semesters won’t be accepted. And no, the AP test of CC class won’t show up on my transcript, but I can write it in my app that I’m planning to take one of them. I’ll either write or call their office to make sure that the AP test will qualify me for admission, because that seems to be the only way to satisfy the requirements.
