You guys think results can come tomorrow? Or only on 10th onwards?
Guys, try not to be too discouraged!!
I honestly don’t think all of the positions are filled, especially considering the size of their waitlist. Why would they have a waitlist that large if they don’t think they’re going to need it? They have a tendency to enroll off the waitlist too.
Also, more people than some realize turn down UC Berkeley for other schools. Of the people I know who got in (~50) less than half of them accepted the offer and these were people were from all over the place, in state, out of state, and 3 international applicants. These people weren’t getting into random, obscure majors either, they were getting into EECS, business, economics, etc. The reason is usually because they got into other top choices like MIT or Cornell. Some even chose LA (1 or 2 also chose UC Irvine) over Berkeley because they simply like it better. And while the other schools aren’t always “better” and them turning down Berkeley seems “illogical” it’s not all that uncommon and it’s reflected in Berkeley’s retention rates (compared to the retention rates of other schools at Berkeley’s caliber). This is why they have such a large waitlist, because they KNOW some people will choose other top schools and they need to meet the requirements for enrollment so they enroll off the waitlist. And yes, I know, 50 people isn’t a lot considering the size of the applicant pool, but like I said, this sentiment is reflected in the stats. Point is, while Berkeley is the dream for some people, it isn’t that way for others because people DO decline the offer. The same holds true for some who got off the waitlist because they end up liking their 2nd choice school more.
For engineers freaking out, relax. So far, I’ve only heard of Civil Engineering majors (and maybe EECS?? I only saw one post on here from EECS I think) who got their notifications from the College of Engineering. And unless every other major in the CoE is completely filled, I doubt they’re done. And from what the admissions office has been saying (according to other posts), the notifications for Civil Engineering wasn’t even supposed to be released yet. So my guess is that they haven’t officially sent out acceptances for the CoE at all yet.
Don’t lose hope guys!! It’s only May 5th. And I bet more than half of the seniors on here have AP Exams to be studying for right now so go do that. Speculating and freaking out won’t get you anywhere.
(I was also waitlisted for the College of Engineering and even if I get in now, I’m not sure I’ll end up going cause I really like the school I SIR’d to.)
@AwkardOctopus Thanks for such a positive comment! I agree with you. I think we gotta stop freaking out since barely any CoE students, fall admits, and International/OOS got in. I think the first wave for OOS/International/Engineering hasn’t even come yet.
So when will the next wave comes out? In a couple days or next week?
Can any of you guys tell me how you got the waitlist numbers?
Its not anywhere online… so how do you’ll know for sure that berkeley waitlisted more this year?
Can anyone call and ask about the number of students waitlisted?
@Rohitmohit it’s available on ms sun website for last years data
Last years waitlister data is here. For UCB most of the accepted students are CA

Yes I know last years statistics. But do you guys know how many were waitlisted this year?
@Thesolu
@Rohitmohit - I asked admissions that question. They said 7000 were wait listed and they hoped half would opt in. Last year 3760 were wait listed, 2445 opted in, 1340 were admitted.

If 7000 students were waitlisted then we are so screwed. There are so many students who were waitlisted. Plus, given the information available on common data set I would say many are feeling optimistic about their chances and chose to opt in which in turn makes it even harder for students to get accepted.
7000 students waitlisted? This is insane. Anyway, I think their priority is to match their commitment to maintain the same level of California admits as last year:
“California residents make up 65.6 percent of the students offered freshman admission, compared to 65.8 percent last year.”
So, depending on their yield for in-state, they would offer new in-state offers until it can meet their target… OOS would be possibly a low priority until they reach these numbers…
@KloudKoder - Actually, UC Berkeley is looking to increase the number of enrolled in-state students by 750

Can any of you guys call and ask how many accepted their waitlist offer from the 7000?
And how many enrolled on May 2nd?
And do they have any idea when to expect the next wave?
I called, they said it will come out in waves. I pressed if we should expect a “wave” today? The rep on the phone was non committal, repeated the term waves more than one time…so lets see.
@Faith2020 Ouch… It seems a very tough year to be OOS in the waitlist, then… At this point, I think i have less and less interest to join. It feels like we will be offered “leftovers” …
Thank you @desiindian597
Can you ask them how many committed from the 7000 are willing to stay on the waitlist?
What are the chances of getting the results today?
The more UC Berkeley keeps me waiting the more likely I am to turn it down for UCLA.
@ETrout1 what major?
@catswin Mechanical engineering
