UC Berkeley - Class of 2022 Waitlisted Applicants Thread

how do you make yourself stand out in your waitlist statement? Also it says “We highly encourage you to be brief in your response, as longer essays are not necessarily better for this process.” so should i not use all the 500 words?

(@gumbymom can you help)

Does anyone know chances of getting off the waitlist for engineering?

My son was admitted off waitlist last year, L&S, bio major. He was offered FPF, Global Edge or spring start, no regular track. He chose FPF.

I’m happy to share his experience and the limited knowledge I have about the process. Disclaimer: I don’t have any insight, just provide a data point.

@zsbradt, as far as I learned from CC last year, L&S not likely to get regular track option.

@SomeKid123, my son’s roommate was admitted off waitlist to Mech Engineering, regular track. So there is chance.

@MattFerreyra7, my son just completed the opt-in form, nothing else.

@audblock, my son filled in his fall grades, and left winter grades blank. Later we realized he could have filled in third-quarter grades, which his school mailed home as progress report.

@soccerjumper did your son do the FPF in San Francisco or at Berkeley campus?

@Camarillomom my S did FPF Berkeley. He was admitted in first wave, did not submit his decision until 1 day before the deadline. Fortunately FPF Berkeley still had spots available.

Can you only get off the waitlist for engineering regular track? My waitlist opt-in form doesn’t give me a choice of any other programs.

@SomeKid123 I’m pretty sure since Engineering is impacted, we are admitted directly into the program.

The prompt says this
“You may utilize this Personal Essay as an opportunity to share more about yourself with the selection committee. Your essay will be considered along with your original application. There is no essay prompt; however, you may review the Wait List Frequently Asked Questions for topic ideas.” Can someone link the FAQs here? I can’t seem to find it.

Also does anyone know the last possible notification date off the waitlist?

Hopefully I can get in, this is my dream school :-S

GPA–> 3.98 unweighted, 4.4 weighted
1430 SAT–> 690 Math, 740 reading/writing
First generation, hispanic

Also how much do they weigh extracurriculars? I go to a Catholic School so I’ve accumulated hundreds of CS hours and am a 3 sport athlete

@4peridot From what I have read in past years, the last notifications are usually the first week of June. June 1st is supposed to be the cut off date but several students not many were sent acceptances in mid-June. Good luck!

it’s been different every year in the last ten.
But the odds are real, unlike some universities. Good luck!

2 things - 1 there is another thread on this http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/21432517#Comment_21432517

2- Here’s what I posted there -stats about my D that got in off the waitlist last year. Her stats were - ACT 32, GPA 3.75 uw at a very rigorous bs in the northeast, OOS, no FA, Applied Math Major in L&S. She wrote about her fit at Berkeley, and how it aligned with her own beliefs, nothing really academic. She was admitted in the first wave on Friday May 5 at 7pm. They did a couple of waves all May with the last being around June 1. They started sending out “it’s not happening” emails late May. And based on CC no one was notified before May 5, this year probably May 4. She was given the option of Jan admit, or if there was room, FPF Berkeley, FPF San Fran or the London Thing. She chose FPF Berkeley immediately and got in, kids who waited did not. She got housing without an issue. She absolutely did not miss anything by doing FPF, it’s in a building on Hillegass Ave and Dwight, they offer a great array of classes and the max class size is 50, one of her classes was actually on campus. The classes all count as if they were “on campus”. Most of the FPF kids were from the waitlist so that was actually sort of a bonding thing. She competes on a club team, is in a sorority and next year will live off campus. She ended up appreciating the waitlist as “character building” after her initial saltiness for being waitlisted in the first place.

For L & S, Global Edge and FPF are available right? Also, do they still have spring entry and fall entry ? Or is fall entry FPF and Global Edge and no more traditional entry way.

@Desiree2 From what i’ve seen on last year’s thread, most people were offered either fpf or global edge. I believe I only saw one person report they got traditional entry, and I’m not sure that’s even accurate. But who knows, it still may be offered, just extremely rare for waitlists.

@soccerjumper did he not fill out a waitlist essay ?

@JigglyPuffs123 where did you get this data? can you give me the link pls.

@Desiree2 Yes, my S filled out waitlist essay. He wrote about what he learned from his senior project, how it connected to his interest, as well as his winter soccer season. Two casual paragraphs, nothing fancy, not even had a beginning or ending. He did not polish it much, only proofread to make sure no grammar errors.

How long is everyone’s essay?

Mine was about 450ish.

500 lul
