UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@sagaciousforever I applied to UCB from Chapman. What do you think our chances are?

@hych12 Not optimal because UCB gives priority to CC.

Also, some of my classes are not transferable so I won’t be surprised if I am rejected. Good luck!

@willowstil thank you! I just got back from Cal Day as well and I agree on all your points! i was not able to check out the transfer housing, but its great to hear you thought it was nice. I ran into quite a few transfers just coincidentally and they were all very encouraging and suggesting we put in effort to be social and meet lots of people! :slight_smile:

@bl00ming I hope you had fun! Did you go to any cool sessions?

Yeah the transfer dorms were way nicer than I was expecting. The building has multiple study rooms on each floor with big windows, nice clean co-ed bathrooms, a courtyard with trees and benches to sit on, a computer lab w/ printer, a “fitness center” with a few exercise machines, etc. It’s also really close to Crossroads which is a perk as well.

The back of the building is directly across from People’s Park but it looks like that entrance is guarded(?) or at the very least, alarmed during the night. But People’s Park is being bulldozed next year anyways :confused:

does anyone have the 4 addresses on their portal?

@americajm Nope, Do you?

@halpmehxd You’re not going to like hearing this, but major prep is a significant factor in admissions especially at UC Berkeley.

If you did not make it clear in your application what resources or classes you took advantage of to circumvent the lack of available major prep coursework offered at your college, I would not be optimistic about your chances at admission.

On the other hand, if you established why you weren’t able to complete the major prep coursework for your desired major, your academic record is quite strong and the admissions readers will understand where you are coming from.

@hych12 I applied from UCLA

I last minute decided to go to Cal Day yesterday but I arrived late in the afternoon and missed a lot of the transfer related stuff (on the plus side I got to take some good photos on campus with a friend to upload onto social media in the rare case that I get accepted LOL)

@akwong15 will you return to UCLA if your transfer to CAL or Davis don’t come through?

Just curious: IF my GPA is out of the range of the previously my major GPA accepted rate, is that means I have no chance of getting in?

@BelleD That range chart is the 25%-75% I don’t know exactly where your GPA is but I would imagine that depending on your application and other factors you always have a chance even if it is smaller than others who fall within these GPA ranges for majors.

@halpmehxd I transferred as a philosophy major a couple of years ago, and I think you have nothing to worry about! Most transfers in the major have around a 3.7, from what I’ve gathered, and almost nobody has 12A/25A/25B completed. On assist.org, none of the prerequisites are listed as required, so don’t worry about not completing them. If your CC didn’t offer those classes, not completing them won’t be counted against you. Also, since your one C is in a non-major class, it probably won’t hurt you much. So I think you have very good chances! Good luck!

If you (or anyone else) have any questions about philosophy at Cal, feel free to reach out!

Hey guys do you think taking more classes would make my application stand out? I applied as an econ major but they only needed up to Calculus 2. Right now I am doing Calculus 3. Will that be considered even for a small factor?

@goldencub hello! is it okay if i ask you some questions about majoring in philosophy? i applied as a philosophy major for ucb, ucla, ucsd, uci. what would you say the differences are in the program, if there are any among these uc’s? i got into uci by tag, but are waiting for ucb, ucla, and ucsd. i know im not admitted yet, but it would be great to know any insight into the major!

@CollegeIsBigOof thank you, I appreciate the honest feedback! I definitely made a huge mistake by not mentioning that on my app

@goldencub thank you! If I get accepted I’d definitely like to talk to you about your experience there :slight_smile:

@michaelershov what’s your gpa/stats?

I can’t wait until Friday :neutral:

@CalBear1998 My GPA is about a 3.78. Its not too high but I am hoping my essays can help me through
