UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

any sociology majors??

@anenglishmajor @nanavn Berkeley is not as competitive in the non-stem majors. Those STEM ones can be really intense. English and business are not that bad.

ACCEPTED !!!
Major: Applied Mathematics
GPA: 3.88
Prereqs: Will be done by spring
ECs: Good amount of volunteering activities, working 2 part time jobs while in school (one of them is being a math tutor which is related to my field of study), also being a Vice President of a club
Essays: Pretty good in my opinion. Talking about why I decided to change my major which made me stay in CC for a total of 5 years. Also mentioned about myself being an immigrant that overcame language barrier where English is not my first language
Applied: UCB, UCD, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, UCSB
Accepted: UCB, UCD, UCSC, UCSB
Pending: UCLA, UCSD

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO GOT IN! FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT, YOU’LL STILL DO WELL REGARDLESS OF WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO!! UCB IS JUST ONE OF THOSE GOOD SCHOOLS OUT THERE

@salllykim I’m soc too :slight_smile:

@Ohm888 any thoughts on media studies?

@slimreaper I don’t know about other University but UC Berkeley is equivalent to throwing yourself into the ocean without knowing how to swim FROM MY EXPERIENCE. Of course, everyone is different. Back to my point, it’s either swim or sink.

@fernazalicious When you say 27000 in gift aid is it all from the Berkeley Transfer Scholarship?

i applied as media studies but was only accepted to the college of letters and sciences…so does this mean i wont get my major? ive been watching videos and so many berkeley students say that a lot of kids end up having to get degrees in majors they never wanted because of how hard it is to get classes

Most of the transfers I met at Cal day said that their first semester was really difficult and lonely, but once they got involved in student organizations, met other transfer students, found mentors, and got adjusted to the environment, they were much happier and most of them said they love it now. (These were mostly humanities majors which probably has something to do with it, they said STEM is where the “stress culture” comes into play.) One of them said “I know people who don’t like it here, which I personally don’t understand because I love it, but in my experience those people aren’t really involved with anything outside of academics and they really let the stress get to them.” I personally have two friends who are current transfers at Cal and they absolutely love it (and I have one who doesn’t, but it’s more about the location and homesickness than the actual school).

I think it is possible to be happy at Cal, don’t let those youtube videos and rumors completely deter you! I found it especially helpful to talk to current transfer students in my specific major, because the vibe and the culture of different majors can vary so widely (I talked to four sociology transfers and they were all happy with the program and said the environment was very collaborative). Good luck making your decisions

@willowstil thank you for that, i think everyone who was freaking out abt cal needed to hear that

@CalAlumandDad - Absolutely, I’m sure whatever we do, your son, myself and my siblings are all making everyone proud. Thank you again. Good luck to your son!

@icetonsvu- DO NOT trip on the spring admit! My son was also a spring 2020 admit. They simply split admits between fall and spring to fill the slots that become available after some students (for whatever reason) leave after the fall semester.

@Shark5094 GBO is the Golden Bear Orientation- a week-long orientation where you learn about Cals culture, values, and expectations. Depending on your major its during this time you will be contacted by your major advisor and told how to declare your major. In my case, I was sent an email at the beginning of July explaining the necessary steps. Try to relax, your about to get bombarded with information and thing to do. Congrats and if you already SIR welcomes to the family. Go Bears…

@luckie1367 I personally loved it. You’re able to take a lot of courses at Haas. Now, depending on where the person wants to live after graduating (Silicon Valley vs LA), UCLA might be a better choice as Communications is geared more toward the entertainment sector.

Just got my @berkeley.edu email it’s getting official & wow so fancy lol!

now hoping for regents… need the priority class registration perk!~

@anthro101 not all, 21k is from the transfer scholarship and 6k is from a pell grant

anyone know if there is a place to find roommates?

Made an account because I’m pretty disappointed about being waitlisted and wanted to ask if anyone is in a similar situation or knows someone from previous years who got in off the waitlist? I have a 4.0, IGETC done after this semester, all major prereqs done except for 1 that wasn’t offered at my CC, did the honors program, work and have an internship, officer position in clubs, had 3 counselors/profs edit and help with my essays and say they loved them… so I’m just wondering, what gives? I’m trying so hard to be happy for everyone who was admitted but I can’t lie, I do feel a little annoyed seeing admitted posts on social media from my peers who I know have failed classes or are bad writers (from peer review in English class). I just want to ask an admissions person what it was about my application that got me put into the waitlist pile!

REJECTED
Major: Physics
GPA: 3.92 (3.86 after TAU)
Community college in the bay area
International Student
IGETC already completed, pre-reqs done by spring
ECs: William Lowell Putnam Competition (leader of the study club for that and also scored 2 during my freshmen year), 2 internship experiences under supervisors that each worked in a group that won Nobel prizes/breakthrough prizes, Mathematics TA at college
Accepted: UCSB, Davis
Pending: UCSD, UCLA, Stanford, Caltech, Cornell, Penn, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Stony Brook
Rejected: UCB

I’m not sure why but I guess I just wasn’t the right fit for Cal. Or one thing I can think of is that I had all A’s in all of my classes but I had a tough time during last fall quarter and I got B in my second quarter physics class and B+ in 4th quarter calculus class which went on my TAU.

Should I go to UCSB?
