UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@professorplum168 thank you for the reply, would you know which is technically the best place for a transfer to feel more at home generally housing wise?

I’ve lived with my parents since like forever so like the housing aspect is the most scary part of the transition. Just tryna find out if I should be looking into on-campus or off campus seeing as I need to make the decision soon as I wont be in the country during the summer break.

@ConfusedVader I’m not really an expert on this, I’m more familiar with the traditional dorms since my kid is a freshman. I only know about the other housing because my kid was exploring all his options for next year as a continuing student and he looked at Martinez and liked it. But he got his first choice of Blackwell again for next year.

I think Martinez is quite nice and that will be your best bet. The other apartments that I mentioned look nice also. However I suspect a lot of transfers go off campus because transfer students are more mature and it’s going to be a bit cheaper.

@Ohm888 That’s the impression that I get. The scholarship amount is less at Cal, but they pick more winners. I’m still hopeful!

Accepted
Major: Statistics
GPA: 4.0 (I had international units which might have dropped my GPA to around 3.75, but I’m not sure how they are evaluated.)
All pre-reqs and igetc done.

Thanks God! I’m really really lucky! Congrats to all those who got in. And for those who didn’t, the name of the university is not that important at the end. This is a country that values and rewards personal effort, and you can do whatever you put your efforts in and be successful. I might sound cliche, but as an immigrant, I really appreciate everything that is offered to me. Best wishes to you all!!

@Emmanuel7 Congrats! I got accepted as a Statistics major too!

@makemeabear sooty, don’t know answer to either.

How does staying an extra year at UCB work? Is that permitted if you want to minor in something like Computer Science? @Ohm888 @ProfessorPlum168

@katyamzz Transfer students with single majors are allowed four semesters to finish the degree and five semesters for those pursuing more than one major. 136 units max for a double major. Not sure if you get extra credits or time for a minor - probably not.

You would need 7 classes to get a minor in CS. 4 lower div (very possible you may have taken Data Structures in CC so that would reduce by 1) and 3 upper division electives.

I know you didn’t ask about double majoring, but anyhow, most majors will require about 30 or so upper division units to graduate. If you double major, you are allowed 2 upper division classes where the class can be used for both majors (if applicable).

It all has to do with unit completion. I do know double majors get an extra semester. Minors don’t add extra time. So you could stretch out as part-time but in general the semester you reach 120 is the final. You can petition for one extra semester, but I can’t vouch for that. But there is a small amount of wiggle room somewhere. Also I don’t think summers count in the semester calculations.

The exact same thing happened with me with FAFSA. Hoping to get some financial aid. I don’t getany money from my parents because they have no money to give so I have to pay for everything on my own.

I GOTTT INN AAAAAHHHHH

Major: Political Science
CCC
AA-T: Political Science, Asian Studies
GPA: 3.89, brought down from a C carried over from high school so actually 3.98 in college
IGETC: Done
Major: Done, 1 required class in progress
EC: On-campus job, Writing tutor, House of Reps victorious campaign internship, HoR district office internship, PTK, CC Honors Program, a leadership forum with college president, a few clubs but no leadership positions
Essays: Very strong essays that i spent like a year on lmao

On UCB it says after you accepted and have a schedule change, you don’t email but submit the form – if I’m switching a non-major/prerequisite class does that matter? Or is that only if you are dropping a requirement or major GE?

@90smix A schedule change is still a schedule change even if it’s not major prep. You should submit the form but it probably won’t affect your admission. It matters mostly so that when you submit your transcript, it has the same courses as the ones you said you would take/have taken.

@cloud7 I see. Thank you  I just submitted it, and yeah it was a film course which is not required for my major so I think it’s okay

I didn’t know that transfers were limited on their time at Berkeley? Can someone elaborate?

After this semester I have only been at CC for 1 year. I don’t have many breadth requirements and the rest of my degree (Chemical Engineering) will take 2.5 years to finish according to Berkeleys website. I also want to minor in political science. Is this out of the question?

@transferrrrrrcc They can give you more time (an extra semester) depending on the amount of prereqs you’ve completed/need to complete. Minoring would be challenging, especially as an engineer at UC Berkeley. They really want students to get out as fast as possible.

Has anyone else been trying to apply for housing but can’t see the apartment option for 2019-2020 academic year? The only options are residence halls 19-20 Academic Year, Summer 2019, Summer Transition 2019, and Family Housing - UVA & CKC Apts 2019-20. Also, does anybody know if studying abroad if financial aid covers housing abroad?

@cloud7 also do you know if we should report a W? Or do we just send in the transcript after we SIR? For my course schedule change I attached my transcript (it says for course changes it is required to upload one) which shows my W

Where I do I found out If I got accepted INTO my major? All that the acceptance to the school says is: “You have been admitted to the College of Letters and Science”. I applied as a “[Arts & Humanities (Theater and Performance Studies)]”. A bit confused.
