UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@JakeC23 Yes, there’s a Facebook group for transfers. The one for last year was called “UC Berkeley Transfer Class of 2020 (Official)” so I’m sure the incoming class will have a similar name but with 2021.

do we have to apply for the reagents scholarship?

If I get Regents at Cal will that help me in any way to get the computer science courses (I want to minor). I know cs/eccs majors gets priority first but regents gets the priority window as well so I’m curious how much or if this well me even at all @ProfessorPlum168 @Ohm888

It says in the eccs website sometimes the cs minor isn’t finished by cal students bc of class impaction. I want to be able to get the courses I need for the minor before committing

@cloud7 do you mean declare after our first semester? Especially for a major like econ where need that upper div Econ course + stats?

@katyamzz During if you can, after if you have to take some prerequisites first:

“Should I declare my major during the first semester?
Yes, if possible. Some majors will require you to complete prerequisite courses prior to applying to a major. Declaring your major as soon as possible will allow you access to seats in upper division courses that are reserved for students in that major.”

@katyamzz Regents won’t help you directly with registering for CS courses. For CS courses that you register in your first semester (presuming you are still undeclared at the time), you can register for lower division courses and get enrolled right away. Once you declare (presumably at the end of your first semester for Economics?) you then lose the ability to enroll directly into lower division CS classes. You will be put on waitlist until end of Phase 2. The good news is that almost always, the CS class sizes for lower division classes will expand to cover almost all waitlisted people.

For upper division CS classes you will also be waitlisted until after Phase 2.

Here’s how Regents will help especially with upper division CS classes - since you get to register first, you wouldn’t get any CS priority, but undoubtedly you would get a very low waitlist number and almost assuredly be cleared from the waitlist. For upper division CS classes you can expect 10% of a class size to clear waitlist.

I agree with @ProfessorPlum168.

i heard some people already got regents but idk if they notify people of that all at the same time or what

@Left_hand sure,
major eecs
GPA: 4.0
major prep: done
IGETC: done
many ee related projects (personal projects)
internships at: TechNet, Intel, California ISO (for 6 months for intel and technet and 2 months for California ISO)

Anyone know what the Berkeley Transfer Scholarship is?

and if you have it (my teen does for $10000) will it be lowered if you get outside scholarships or if you get the Alumni scholarship?

It’s a $10,000 scholarship? Which office offers it?

It’s part of financial aid @Ohm888 I got a 27k transfer scholarship. It’s all need based financial aid. Most likely from the blue and gold @spiritualgift not sure though

@halpmehxd cal regents hasn’t come out yet. Only ucla has sent an invite out for those eligible for regents but to apply. Cal sends regents out sometime in May

@Ohm888 @ProfessorPlum168

How does part time enrollment at Cal work in terms of financial aid? I think it was something like 13 units in order to receive full financial aid? Are there any exceptions if you don’t want to take such a heavy course load?

@goodafternoonsir Let us know how your appeal turns out! Good luck :slight_smile:

@Ohm888 @ProfessorPlum168 We have 4 semesters to complete not including summer semesters so can I still take courses summer '21 to fulfill a minor?

@katyamzz sorry, don’t know much about FA.

@katyamzz 12 units is considered full-time for financial aid (at UC Berkeley). I vaguely remember 9 units counting as full-time but I haven’t found anything supporting that. (You can talk to financial aid about it though and I’m sure they’ll give you a better answer.) 6 units is the minimum you need to be enrolled in to receive some financial aid (but it will be less than what you would receive if you were full-time).

From what I’ve heard, it’s hard to take less than the required number of units (which is 13 for L&S) unless you are either working 15+ hours/week, have extenuating circumstances, or are registered with DSP (the disability program at UC Berkeley).

Does anyone know much about student life in Cal? Specifically stress levels and mental health of students? I don’t know any current students but there’s so much out there about how Berkeley students are all overworked!

As someone with a history of mental illnesses this has really kept me wondering if I should commit to Berkeley as I’m not sure if it’ll be a healthy decision for me. Any advice would be appreciated!!

@whostolemycookie what’s your major?
