UC Berkeley Haas 2016 Transfer Thread

@josh2633 Your grades are obviously where they need to be, but you’re also missing almost every pre-req, so it’s hard to say on that.

Your work experience is fine.

Your EC’s look okay. Not great but not bad … but I don’t know what all exactly you did or what you were responsible for, so it all comes down to how you sell it.

As long as you do really well on the pre-reqs, I think you’d have as good as shot as any … it will all come down to how you sell yourself in the essays. So long as your GPA is within the threshold, the essay portion is where they’ll get the best feel for who you are, why you want to go to Haas, and why you think you should be accepted to Haas.

@josh2633 isn’t stats 10 fulfilled by calc 1? Forgive me, I’m not looking at a Berkeley course list.

Anyhoo, you can do 2-3 in fall. No biggie because they will see the grades before they start their analysis.

@briank82 thanks. yeah i was worried since I’m missing the pre-reqs. i was planning on majoring in econ and decided last minute to switch to business admin. but since berkeley requires a grade update isn’t it fine as long as i get the pre-reqs done this fall semester?

@Ohm888 when i look on assist see that it is separate. I am a bit confused with the assist sheet as well but I’m meeting with a counselor tomorrow to clear things up.

@briank82 also i might not need a bus class… so i would have 3 left since it has bus, and 2 semesters of calc OR 2 semesters of calc and both macro and micro econ.

You just need everything done by spring. Having as many pre-reqs done by fall is ideal so they can see you’ve done well in them, but I had my calc 2 in spring after my application was sent in and grade update was sent, and it wasn’t an issue. I know of a few others who were the same and got it.

@briank82 ok cool. yeah i can get all my pre-reqs done in the fall (stats, calc 2, and macro econ) my only concern is if they’ll look down upon the fact that i won’t finish breadth requirements until spring? is breadth required or is it looked down upon if you don’t finish?

Breadths don’t matter. They used to be a requirement of admission but aren’t anymore. It behoves you to have them done because it will give you more flexibility in your courses when you get to Berkeley, but they don’t need to be done. It might look good to them if they’re done, but it really doesn’t matter.

I had all mine done though, as did quite a few that I know. Also make sure you check out the American Cultures and the American Institutions requirements. They don’t need to be done prior to transfer, they just need to be done to graduate, but once again it will give you more flexibility in your course selection when you do transfer … not to mention those courses, as well as the breadths, will almost always be easier at a community college, so it’s not a bad idea to knock as much as you can out beforehand.

@briank82 oh ok. and after looking at assist again, i just need macroecon, calc 2 and stats for the major pre-req but ill have all three done this fall so they’ll have the grades before the spring semester when see my application. i hope to keep my 4.0 and do you have any tips for the essay? should i improve my ECs?

started in 2015 transferring 2017

senior director of honors program student council 2016-2017

-Work experience:
sales and product development manager at a retail store.

i will also have finished my cc honors program

@josh2633 We can’t give you much advice on the essay’s as it’s a totally new format. Last year, and in subsequent years, we had two prompts we were required to answer with 1,000 words spread between them however we liked. Overall, though, just find a good way to tell your story and make yourself stand out.

Honestly I think your ECs are kind of weak. It’s basically two things related to honor society. The positions themselves are good, but again it’s honor society. Those are good, but they’re really narrowly focused and most everyone will be in PTK. You have several months to find another thing or two to get involved with. Find something off campus, in the community. You need to stand out and just the honor society won’t do it. Neither will a 4.0 in a sea of 4.0’s (and a ton of 3.8+).

@briank82 the two positions (honors program student council director of transfer 2015-2016
senior director of honors program student council 2016-2017) are not from the PTK they are separate and are leadership positions at my cc’s honors program not PTK if that makes a difference and does work counts one of the EC? or should i look for something else outside of school? and if so what kind in the community?

I realized that, but overall you’re still just involved in honor society. It’s important to keep in mind that everyone you’ll be applying with and who is competitive will be eligible for PTK and other honor societies. They may not be involved with them or hold a leadership position (which is obviously beneficial to you), but you need to diversify.

That you’re doing them or have done them is great and I wouldn’t stop, but I’d strongly encourage finding something else … especially considering you’ll have all your major pre-reqs done by fall.

In the school or in the community, either works. Not sure what I’d recommend in the community though, but just take a few minutes and see what’s out there. Where you can make an impact. Haas wants to see impact, so keep that in mind.

The competition is real man, so you gotta find ways to stand out. This year they accepted around 95 transfers out of almost 2,000 applicants.

For those who were accepted…how has the financial aid been going? Will you have to take out loans, etc…

That’s going to be different for everyone depending on their own situation.

I think, generally speaking, financial aid has been a bit of a disaster this year because Berkeley is switching to an entirely new admin system which affects every part of school, th admission process, etc. Beyond that, they implemented a rule where 20% has to be paid by a certain date or you’ll be dropped, which has caused panic.

Beyond that, your question is far too vague.

I’m applying to Haas this Fall and was wondering what you guys think my chances are.

GPA: 4.0
Prereqs: all completed
Breadths: all completed
ECs: Treasurer of Student Gov, VP of Business Club, President of Consulting Club, Senator of Student gov
Work: Paid finance intern at public company
Volunteer: ran local drive, president of relief club, organized and ran science night

Essays: 9/10s I think

@lovehaas100 It’ll come down to your essays. Everything you’ve got going on is great but your essays need to somehow make you stand out. It’s hard to chance people for Haas because there are so many competitive applicants for such few spots.

@briank82 do you think not having one major prep class completed by the end of fall will affect my chances if i have a 4.0? Its the intro business course but I’m planning to take it during my school’s winter intercession.

@josh2633 Not at all. I was doing the second calc class in spring and it wasn’t an issue, and plenty of other people were still working on major pre-reqs in spring as well.

Do you guys know of people that had 4.0’s and got rejected? Also, does Haas read just the supplemental essay or both the supplemental and UC essays?
